The reason dog urine smell comes back on a humid day is chemistry, not cleaning effort. Urine contains urea and uric acid salts, and the salts are insoluble in water; when humidity rises they re-crystallise and release the same odour again. Water and detergent rinse the surface and leave the problem in the backing.
Dried urine needs an enzyme, not more shampoo
Treat dried dog urine with an enzyme-based product that digests uric acid salt, give it the dwell time to work, then extract with clean water. Shampooing without the enzyme step leaves the salt in the backing, which is why the smell returns. Dry the room quickly afterwards, because damp backing holds the odour.

First, find how far it went
Urine wicks. A patch the size of a saucer on the surface often means a much larger area in the backing and underlay, and cleaning only what you can see is why the smell stays. Two practical ways to map it: use a blacklight (urine fluoresces under UV), or press a folded white towel onto the area and check whether the wicking line spreads.
If the underlay is saturated, carpet cleaning alone will not fix it. Underlay is cheap relative to repeated cleaning, and on a repeated-soiling spot it is usually the correct repair.
The sequence for dried urine
- Blot, do not rub. Press a clean towel onto the area to remove anything still liquid.
- Apply the enzyme product at label dilution to the full wicking area, not just the visible stain, and work it into the pile with a soft brush.
- Give it dwell time. Twenty minutes minimum; an hour is better. The enzyme needs time to digest the salt, and rinsing early stops the reaction before it finishes.
- Extract with clean water using a carpet extraction machine, with slow passes and several dry passes. A wet vacuum with a hard floor tool is not the same as an extraction wand.
- Dry fast. Air movement and, if the room is humid, dehumidification. Damp carpet is how a urine patch becomes a mould problem.

What actually draws urine out of carpet
Two things: an enzyme that breaks the salt down, and extraction that carries the residue away. Heat and humidity make the smell worse rather than better, which is why a hot-water extraction without an enzyme pre-treatment can leave the room smelling stronger for a day. A household vacuum does nothing; it moves air through the carpet and lifts the odour into the room.
Machines and drying
For a single spot, a portable extractor is enough. For a room, a wand or a rotary extraction tool gets the water into the pile and out again, and our carpet extractors and shampooers range covers both. Drying is not optional: an air mover run for several hours prevents the moisture problem that follows a good clean.
Repeated marking, and the honest answer
Where a dog keeps returning to the same spot, cleaning is only half the job. If the underlay is saturated, replace it; if the carpet backing has delaminated, the affected section needs replacing. Where the smell is coming from the skirting or the subfloor beneath, no amount of carpet treatment will resolve it and the source has to be treated.
Questions we get asked most
- How do you get dried dog pee out of carpet?
- Re-wet the area with an enzyme-based neutraliser across the full wicking zone, give it at least twenty minutes, then extract with clean water and dry the room quickly. Water alone does not remove the uric acid salt that causes the smell.
- What kills the smell of dog pee?
- An enzyme digester that breaks down uric acid, followed by extraction. Masking fragrances and disinfectants reduce what you smell today and leave the salt that returns on the next humid day.
- What is the best carpet cleaner for dog urine?
- A urine-specific neutraliser such as Spotaway U for spots, and an enzyme digester such as Deozyme for larger or repeated areas. A general carpet shampoo is the wrong product for this job.
- What draws urine out of carpet?
- Extraction after an enzyme treatment, and time. Heat and humidity do the opposite — they release the odour — so avoid hot-water extraction without a pre-treatment.
- When is the underlay the problem?
- When the same spot smells again within days of cleaning, or when the blacklight shows the stain spreading well beyond the visible patch. Replacing the underlay is usually cheaper than cleaning it repeatedly.
