Commercial Cleaning Chemical Dilution Guide

The label wins. A ratio calculator can help convert instructions, but it cannot decide the correct dose. Use the product label and current SDS or product information sheet, and never combine chemicals unless the manufacturer explicitly instructs it.

Read the instruction before calculating

A dilution calculator converts a confirmed instruction into a volume. It cannot decide which product, concentration or contact time a job requires. Start with the label and current product information. Where the product is a workplace hazardous chemical, keep the current safety data sheet available and follow the site’s risk controls.

Write down four inputs before opening the concentrate: exact product, intended surface or task, required dilution for that task, and final amount needed. Many products list several rates for light cleaning, heavy soil or another approved use. Selecting the wrong row accurately still produces the wrong solution.

What does a ratio such as 1:100 mean?

Manufacturers do not always express ratios in the same way. “One part concentrate in 100 parts finished solution” is different from “one part concentrate added to 100 parts water”. Read the wording and any worked example rather than relying on the numbers alone.

Calculate from the required finished volume

When the instruction defines concentrate as a fraction of the finished solution, convert the final volume into the same unit and divide by the ratio denominator.

concentrate mL = finished solution mL ÷ dilution denominator

For 750 mL of finished solution at 1:50 under that convention, 750 ÷ 50 gives 15 mL of concentrate. Add water until the total reaches 750 mL. For 5 L at 1:20, convert 5 L to 5,000 mL: 5,000 ÷ 20 gives 250 mL.

Small concentrate volumes can be difficult to measure consistently with an ungraduated cap. Use a suitable dedicated measure or an approved dispensing system. Do not estimate by eye, and do not return unused diluted product to the concentrate container.

Use a controlled mixing sequence

  1. Confirm the product, task, surface and required rate on the label.
  2. Review the SDS and workplace procedure; apply the required controls and PPE.
  3. Select a clean, compatible and correctly labelled container.
  4. Measure with a dedicated device or calibrated dispenser.
  5. Add materials in the manufacturer’s stated order and minimise splashing or mist.
  6. Confirm the final volume and label the prepared solution as required.
  7. Store, use or dispose of the remainder according to the label, SDS and site procedure.

Never combine chemicals unless the manufacturer explicitly instructs that combination. Hazardous chemicals can react and create additional risks. An odour or colour change is not a safe compatibility test.

Why stronger solution can perform worse

Over-concentration may increase residue, rinsing, surface damage, exposure and cost. Residue can attract new soil or leave a floor tacky. Under-concentration may fail to remove the intended soil. The correct rate balances the product’s approved use with the actual task.

For sanitisers and disinfectants, concentration is only one part of the method. Pre-cleaning, coverage, contact time, temperature, rinsing and surface compatibility may also be specified. Do not shorten contact time by increasing concentration unless the product instructions expressly permit that alternative.

Dispensing systems need their own verification

A wall-mounted or bottle-fill dispenser can reduce manual measuring, but its output still needs checking. Wrong tips, pressure variation, blocked inlets, empty concentrate and unauthorised adjustment can change the result. Follow the supplier’s calibration and maintenance process and record checks at a frequency appropriate to the risk.

If workers prepare several products, use clear separation and identification so a bottle cannot be connected to the wrong concentrate. Keep current labels legible. Replace damaged secondary containers rather than transferring solution into an unmarked bottle.

Control the chemical store as part of dilution

Keep the hazardous chemical register and current SDS documents accessible where required. Store incompatible products according to their information, control access, and keep measuring devices with the product or system they serve. Safe Work Australia notes that an SDS includes handling, storage, first aid, spill response and disposal information; it is more than an emergency document.

Common dilution errors to prevent

  • Using a rate remembered from a different product.
  • Confusing final solution volume with the amount of water.
  • Mixing a full container when the shift needs only a small amount.
  • Measuring concentrate with an unmarked cap or cup.
  • Leaving a secondary bottle unlabelled.
  • Assuming a dispenser remains accurate without inspection.
  • Adding concentrate to leftover solution of unknown strength.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reuse an unlabelled spray bottle?

No. Use a suitable container labelled according to the product and workplace requirements. An unknown bottle creates identification, exposure and accidental-mixing risks.

Is the SDS the same as directions for use?

No. The SDS communicates hazards, handling and emergency information. The label or product information supplies task-specific directions. Use both where applicable.

Should diluted solution be kept overnight?

Only if the product instructions and workplace procedure allow it. Stability and labelling requirements vary. Prepare an amount matched to the task when the directions do not support storage.
