Accessories That Multiply Effective Cleaning Without Raising Bar
Foam, brushes and reach add cleaning power; the pump's bar stays the same.

WorkSafe Victoria's guidance on high-pressure water jetting contains one line that matters more to accessory buying than any brochure: every part, fitting and hose should be the right size, compatible, and rated equal to or more than the equipment's maximum operating pressure. Foam lances, extension lances, brushes and surface cleaners all sit inside that rule.
That rule also points to the opportunity. None of these attachments adds a single bar to the pump. What they change is how the pressure and flow you already have reach the dirt: more chemical contact time, more agitation, better reach and a steadier stand-off. This guide reads the rules first, then works through each accessory type with real Freshway listings.
Pressure washer accessories for commercial crews: the short answer
The commercial pressure washer accessories that multiply effective cleaning without raising bar are a foam lance for dwell time, a rotary brush for agitation, a surface cleaner for flat areas and an extension lance for reach. Each must be rated at or above your machine's pressure, flow and temperature, and fit its gun connection.
Put another way: if a crew keeps asking for a bigger machine, check the accessory kit first. Before upsizing, check whether foam, agitation and reach are doing their share of the work, because none of them costs extra pump pressure.
What the WHS guidance says about accessories
Australian guidance treats attachments as part of the jetting system, not as optional extras. Three points from WorkSafe Victoria's high-pressure water jetting safety alert, which summarises AS 4233.1, shape how a buyer should think about them:
- Ratings: all parts, fittings and hoses should be rated equal to or more than the equipment's maximum operational pressure.
- Modification: operators should not modify jetting equipment or its attachments without written approval from the equipment maker or another competent person.
- Training: refresher or extra training should be given when crews start using new or more powerful equipment or new technology.
The class of the system does not change with the attachment. The alert puts systems from 800 to 5,600 bar litres per minute in Class A. Freshway's listing for the Kränzle Quadro 599TST gives 150 bar at 10 L/min, so 150 × 10 = 1,500 bar·L/min: Class A whichever accessory is clipped on. Pumps Australia's buyer's guide uses the same multiply-flow-by-pressure rule of thumb.
For crews moving between sites, the reach question is also a WHS question. SafeWork NSW's hazardous manual tasks guidance lists sustained or awkward postures, such as bending, reaching and twisting, as risk factors, and defines a sustained posture as one held for more than 30 seconds at a time. Kneeling to aim a straight lance under a truck is exactly that.
Foam and dwell: let the chemical do the work
Foam is the simplest way to make a fixed pressure feel stronger. Spitwater's guide to mixing chemicals in a foamer sets out the sequence plainly: apply, dwell, rinse. It adds that the chemical needs time to break down contamination, and that rushing this stage often leads to using more pressure than necessary.
The application method changes how the chemical behaves. Spitwater's note on two-step washing for heavy transport contrasts the options: mist gives deeper penetration, foam gives increased dwell time with more control, and flooding gives less penetration. The same page warns against letting product dry on the surface and against use on hot surfaces or in direct sunlight, which rules out foaming a dark truck panel at 2 pm in a Western Sydney summer.
Freshway's listing for the Powershot 18960-D12 foaming lance shows the ratings to check before clipping one on. It gives a maximum of 2300 PSI, 20 L/min and 60ºC, a 1-litre bottle, a D12 quick connect plug, and a top dial for the chemical-to-water ratio plus an adjustable fan. For a machine with a different gun fitting, the Kärcher range in Freshway's Kärcher pressure washer accessories collection covers that system's foam and brush options.
Lances and extensions: reach without bending
A longer or angled lance does not clean harder, but it changes where the operator stands. That cuts setup time between passes and keeps the stand-off distance steady, so the pressure arriving at the surface stays more consistent across a long job.
Freshway's listing for the Kränzle underfloor lance (410755) is a good example. It is a two-piece stainless lance with a total length of 1,000 mm, a 90-degree tip that sprays upwards, a D12 plug and a fixed 4007 fan nozzle. The listing rates it to 250 bar, 40 L/min and 150ºC, and describes it being slid under a vehicle while the operator stands upright, so nobody kneels in the runoff.
Double lances solve a different problem. Freshway's listing for the Kränzle double lance (12133) describes a twist grip that switches between a high-pressure and a low-pressure nozzle, and says the low-pressure setting activates the machine's downstream chemical injector. That lets one operator apply detergent and rinse without changing tools.
Brushes: agitation instead of pressure
Road film and fine grime often survive a high-pressure pass because there is nothing physically breaking the film. Pumps Australia's buyer's guide notes that a rotary brush helps get difficult jobs done efficiently, with soft brushes suiting cars, trucks and boats and harder bristles working well on concrete and brick.
Freshway's listing for the Kränzle rotary wash brush gives a 180 mm soft-bristle head on a 500 mm stainless lance with a D12 plug, a flow range of 10 to 20 L/min and a 35°C maximum temperature. Two numbers stand out for buyers. A 10 L/min machine sits at the very bottom of that flow range, and the 35°C limit means the brush should never be used on the hot setting of a hot-water machine. Check the listing's pressure rating and compatibility list against your machine before first use.
Surface cleaners: a quick recap
Surface cleaners have been covered in depth elsewhere, so here is only what matters for an accessory kit. They hold the nozzles at a fixed height, spin them to cover a wide strip, and contain the spray under a housing.
Freshway's listing for the Kränzle UFO round surface cleaner (41880) gives a 300 mm diameter, twin 045 rotary nozzles, a maximum of 180 bar, a flow capacity of 10 to 12 L/min, 60ºC and a weight of 2.2 kg, with a splash-proof rubber rim. Containment matters on Australian sites for a second reason: the NSW EPA's stormwater guidance says runoff from washing activities must not enter any stormwater drain.
Spec match: checking each accessory against the machine
The table runs the four accessories above against one machine, the Kränzle Quadro 599TST, listed at 150 bar (2175 PSI), 10 L/min, a 15 A supply and a D12 gun. The PSI ratings are converted at 1 bar = 14.503 PSI, the figure in Pumps Australia's High Pressure Water Cleaner Guidance Manual.
| Accessory (Freshway listing) | Pressure rating | Flow rating | Temperature | Against a 150 bar, 10 L/min D12 machine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Powershot 18960-D12 foam lance | 2300 PSI (about 159 bar) | Up to 20 L/min | 60ºC | Pressure margin about 9 bar; flow well inside rating. |
| Kränzle UFO 300 mm (41880) | 180 bar | 10 to 12 L/min | 60ºC | 30 bar margin; flow at the bottom of the range. |
| Kränzle rotary wash brush 500 mm | Check listing | 10 to 20 L/min | 35°C | Flow at the minimum; cold water only. |
| Kränzle underfloor lance (410755) | 250 bar | Up to 40 L/min | 150ºC | 100 bar margin; suits hot-water machines too. |
The pattern is worth noticing. Pressure is rarely the limit on a 150 bar machine; flow minimums and temperature ceilings are. A brush or surface cleaner listed for at least 10 L/min is outside its range on a machine delivering less, and a 35°C brush on a hot-water unit is a damaged brush. Freshway's commercial pressure washers list pressure and flow on each product page, so the comparison takes a minute.
Service life belongs in the same sum. Pumps Australia's manual schedules quick couplings or O-rings at 500 hours and the high-pressure nozzle at 750 hours. A crew running 20 hours a week reaches the coupling interval in 500 ÷ 20 = 25 weeks and the nozzle interval in 750 ÷ 20 = 37.5 weeks, so a twice-yearly accessory check fits that duty.
Common mistakes with accessories
- Buying on connector alone. A D12 plug that fits the gun says nothing about the flow range or temperature rating.
- Skipping the dwell. Foaming and rinsing straight away wastes the chemical, then crews reach for more pressure.
- Foaming hot panels in the sun. Spitwater warns against letting product dry on surfaces.
- Running brushes hot. Check the temperature limit before using one on a hot-water machine.
- Home-made adaptors. WorkSafe Victoria says attachments should not be modified without competent written approval.
- Uncontained runoff. Surface cleaners and foam do not remove the duty to keep washwater out of stormwater drains.
Checklist for site supervisors
- Record the machine's working pressure, flow, maximum water temperature and gun connection.
- Check every accessory's pressure, flow range and temperature rating against those figures.
- Confirm foam chemicals, dilution and dwell with the chemical's label and the site's surfaces.
- Plan runoff control before the first pass: bunding, collection or a wash bay connected to sewer under council approval.
- Brief crews when a new accessory or more powerful machine arrives, and record the training.
- Inspect couplings, O-rings and nozzles on a schedule tied to running hours.
Frequently asked questions
Will a foam lance make my pressure washer more powerful?
No. A foam lance does not add pressure. It applies chemical as a clinging foam so it has longer to work before the rinse, which means the same machine removes more soil with less effort.
Do accessories change the AS 4233.1 class of my machine?
No. The class is based on the system's output in bar litres per minute, which comes from the pump. A 150 bar, 10 L/min machine works out at 1,500 bar litres per minute, which is Class A with any attachment fitted.
How do I know an accessory suits my machine?
Compare four figures on both product pages: maximum pressure, flow range, maximum temperature and connection type. The accessory's pressure rating should be at or above the machine's, and the machine's flow should sit inside the accessory's range.
Can I use a rotary brush with hot water?
Only if its listing allows it. Freshway's listing for the Kränzle 500 mm rotary wash brush gives a 35°C maximum, so it should be run on cold water only.
