270 against 840. Those are the brush speeds Freshway lists for the two versions of the Nilfisk SC800: 270 RPM on the SC800 71 disc deck and 840 RPM on the SC800 71C cylindrical deck. The listed brush pressure runs the other way, up to 77 kg on the disc and up to 43 kg on the cylindrical. Same chassis, same 710 mm path, same 95-litre tanks. The only real difference is what spins under the machine.
If you are the one behind the handle, you feel that difference on the first night. This guide works from the operator's side: what goes wrong on each floor type, which deck fixes it, and what to check before the deck choice is locked in.

Disc vs cylindrical floor scrubber: the short answer
Choose a disc deck for smooth, flat floors such as vinyl, sealed or polished concrete and flat tile, where down pressure and pad choice matter most. Choose a cylindrical deck for grout lines, textured safety floors and sites with light loose debris, because the counter-rotating rollers reach into recesses and sweep while they scrub.
Everything below is the detail behind that rule, organised around the problems you are likely to see on the floor.
Scrub deck types explained from the handle
A disc deck runs one or more round brushes or pad drivers flat against the floor. A cylindrical deck runs a pair of roller brushes that spin in opposite directions and flick loose dirt into a tray. Tennant Australia's brush guide puts typical disc speeds at 250 to 300 RPM and cylindrical speeds at 600 to 800 RPM, and notes that disc machines have no way of collecting debris, so the floor must be swept first.
The Freshway listings follow the same pattern. The SC800 numbers above sit close to those ranges. The Hako Scrubmaster B12 is listed with a single disc that protrudes on both sides for edge cleaning. The Kärcher BR 40/10 C runs twin rollers at a listed 1,100 RPM with adjustable contact pressure up to 30 kg, and picks up water both forwards and backwards.
Symptom: grout lines stay dark after the pass
This is the classic cylindrical job. A flat disc rides across the tops of the tiles and bridges the grout joints, while a roller pushes bristle tips down into them. Tennant Australia lists natural stone, rubber studded floors and safety floors among the surfaces that suit cylindrical brushes, and lists the ability to clean grout lines as one of the benefits.
Before you blame the deck, rule out the cheaper causes:
- Check the brush. Worn bristles lose reach. Tennant suggests replacing cylindrical brushes when the bristle is down to about 1 cm.
- Check the bristle grade. On the Nilfisk SC100, Freshway lists a white standard roller and a hard black roller that it describes for textured safety tiles and wide concrete grout lines.
- Check dwell time. Chemical needs time on the floor before the brush arrives. A slower pass often does more than a harder brush.
If the grout still stays dark after all three, a cylindrical deck is the fix. On compact sites that can mean a small roller machine such as the Kärcher BR 40/10 C or the Nilfisk SC250, which Freshway lists with a cylindrical brush that also picks up light debris.
Symptom: smooth floors look dull or keep their scuffs
On flat vinyl, sealed concrete and polished concrete, the problem is usually not reach but contact and finish. Tennant Australia names flat surfaces, vinyl composition tile, sheet vinyl and polished concrete as the floors where disc brushes are preferred. Its guide adds that disc machines can run pad drivers for maintaining finished floors, and can remove thicker build-up because they create more down pressure.
That is where the SC800 71 earns its listed 77 kg. On a disc scrubber, polished concrete also lets you change the result by changing the pad rather than the machine. Pad selection is covered in Freshway's commercial floor pad colour guide, and the brush-or-pad question itself is in the floor scrubber brush vs pad guide. This article stays with the deck underneath.
Symptom: grit and crumbs streak behind the squeegee
A disc deck cannot pick up loose debris, so anything left on the floor goes under the squeegee blade and drags a wet line behind it. The fix on a disc machine is a proper pre-sweep, every time.
A cylindrical deck changes the routine. Nilfisk Australia's ride-on scrubber dryer page says cylindrical machines can sweep up debris and scrub in a single pass, removing the need to pre-sweep where there is a lot of loose debris. Freshway's listings describe the same function on the SC800 71C debris tray, the SC6000 910C and the SC6500 1300C hopper.
Keep expectations realistic. The SC800 listing talks about "small solid rubbish" and "light debris". Pallet wrap, cable ties and large packaging still need picking up by hand, or they will wrap the rollers. Tennant also points out that cylindrical sweeping is done wet, so it does not raise dust.
Symptom: brushes and pads wear out faster than budgeted
Consumable cost depends on what each deck takes, how often you change it, and how many parts you have to keep on the shelf. Prices change, so check each product page rather than relying on a figure here. What you can plan is the parts list.
- Disc decks take round brushes or a pad holder plus pads. Freshway lists Nilfisk disc brushes in several grades at 360 mm, 370 mm and 430 mm, plus flat pad holders, and pads are bought in packs.
- Cylindrical decks take roller brushes matched to the deck length. Freshway lists a 710 mm polypropylene roller for the SC800 71C, and four 310 mm rollers for the SC100: white, hard black, microfibre and a blue carpet roller.
Wear is driven by use, floor condition, soil level and operator speed, as the Tennant guide notes. Log the change date on every brush and pad for one quarter. That record tells you more about running cost than any brochure.
Conversion kits: what you can and cannot swap
Most of the flexibility sits inside a deck type, not between them. On a disc deck, you can usually switch between brushes and a pad holder. Check that the holder is listed for your exact model, as the Nilfisk 355 mm holder is listed for the SC350, SC351 and Scrubtec 337 series. On a cylindrical deck, you change roller grade, as with the SC100's four options.
Switching between disc and cylindrical is normally a purchase decision. Freshway lists the SC800 as two separate configurations, and it lists the Nilfisk SC6000 and SC6500 ride-ons as separate cylindrical (C) and disc (D) models. Some platforms offer more than one head. Tennant Australia's T600 page lists disc, cylindrical and orbital heads for one walk-behind. If you think the site may change, ask before you order whether the deck can be swapped later, and what parts and labour that involves.
Spec-sheet traps when comparing scrub decks
Deck specifications are easy to misread across types. Run through these steps before you compare two quotes:
- Compare RPM only within a deck type. 840 RPM on a roller and 270 RPM on a disc describe different actions, not a faster and a slower machine.
- Read brush pressure as "up to". The T600 page lists up to 41 kg cylindrical, up to 136 kg disc and up to 77 kg orbital on the same machine, so lower roller pressure is normal, not a weakness.
- Separate scrub width from squeegee width. The SC800 lists a 710 mm scrub path and a 910 mm squeegee. Aisles and doorways must clear the wider figure.
- Treat productivity as theoretical. Freshway lists the SC6500 1300C and 1300D at 11,700 m²/h theoretical against 8,190 m²/h actual. That gap is 30%.
- Ask about the debris tray on cylindrical machines: capacity, how it is removed, and how often it needs emptying on your site.
Decision table: which deck for which floor
Use the first column to find your main floor and soil, then check the right-hand columns against the machines on your shortlist.
| Main floor and soil | Deck to start with | Why | Freshway listing to compare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vinyl, flat tile or sealed concrete, light soil | Disc | Flat contact, pads for finish care | Hako Scrubmaster B12 |
| Polished concrete in retail or offices | Disc | Pad choice controls the finish | Nilfisk SC800 71 |
| Kitchen or washroom tiles with deep grout | Cylindrical | Rollers reach into joints | Kärcher BR 40/10 C |
| Textured safety flooring or rubber studs | Cylindrical | Bristles follow the texture | Nilfisk SC250 or SC100 |
| Warehouse aisles with grit and small debris | Cylindrical | Sweeps and scrubs in one pass | Nilfisk SC6000 910C |
| Smooth warehouse slab with heavy marks | Disc | More down pressure | Nilfisk SC6000 1050D |
Mixed sites are common. If grout and debris make up most of the floor area, go cylindrical. If the floor is mostly smooth with a few tiled zones, a disc machine plus a small roller unit for the wet areas is often the simpler answer. Whichever deck you choose, the floor has to be left dry. SafeWork NSW lists slippery floors resulting from cleaning products or methods among slip hazards, and WorkSafe Victoria names wet and slippery floor conditions among the most common causes of slips, trips and falls.
Frequently asked questions
Isn't a cylindrical scrubber always better on tiles?
Not always. Rollers suit tiles with recessed grout or texture. On large, flat, tightly grouted tiles, a disc deck with the right brush or pad can do the job, and it gives you pad options for finish care.
If cylindrical decks sweep, can I skip the pre-sweep completely?
Only for light, small debris. Freshway's SC800 listing describes the tray as collecting small solid rubbish. Pick up wrap, ties and larger items first, or they can jam or wrap the rollers.
Doesn't the higher brush pressure on a disc deck mean it cleans better?
It means more force on flat floors, which helps with heavy marks and build-up. It does not help bristles reach into grout lines, which is where a roller at higher speed and lower pressure works better.
Can I buy a disc machine now and convert it to cylindrical later?
Usually not cheaply. Many ranges, including the Nilfisk SC800, are sold as separate disc and cylindrical configurations. Ask before buying whether a deck swap is possible on that model and what it involves.
Next steps with Freshway
Walk your site and estimate how much of the floor is smooth, how much is grouted or textured, and how much loose debris you see on a typical night. Then compare deck types across Freshway's floor scrubbers range, or browse the wider commercial cleaning machines collection for parts and brushes. Pair the deck with a low-foaming product from the cleaning chemicals range. Check each product page for current pricing, and ask the Arncliffe team which brushes and pad holders are listed for the exact model before you order.
