0, 15, 25, 40. Those four numbers on a set of quick-connect nozzles decide more about how a job turns out than the pressure figure on the machine's frame. Freshway's Powerblast nozzle set listing colour-codes them: red 0° pinpoint, yellow 15° chisel, green 25° fan, white 40° wide sweep, plus a black low-pressure soap nozzle.

This cheat sheet is written from the operator's side of the trigger. It follows a typical contract week with one 240 V machine, job by job, and ends with a one-page table you can print and keep in the van.

Parameter Cheat Sheet for Common AU Commercial Jobs

Pressure washer parameter cheat sheet Australia: the short answer

A pressure washer parameter cheat sheet for Australian commercial jobs comes down to four choices per surface: nozzle angle or attachment, hot or cold water, starting pressure and runoff control. Start wide and low, test a patch, step up only if the soil stays. Timber and paintwork need restraint. Asbestos is never pressure cleaned.

The machine for this week is a Kränzle Quadro 599TST. Freshway lists it at 150 bar (adjustable) and 10 L/min on a 240 V, 15 A socket, with a 20 m hose reel, a flat jet nozzle and a Dirtkiller turbo nozzle included. Most of the advice transfers to any commercial cold water machine in that class.

How to use this sheet

Work through the same six steps on every job. It takes a minute, and it is the minute that prevents most damage claims.

  1. Name the surface and the soil. Concrete with tyre marks is a different job from concrete with oil.
  2. Check for stop conditions. Possible asbestos, soft timber, old paint, or work at height. Any of these changes the method or ends the job.
  3. Pick the attachment and match the nozzle size to the machine. Freshway lists its 030 nozzle kit for machines up to 3000 PSI and 11 L/min, and the 04 set for 16 L/min at 4200 PSI. A tip sized for a different flow will not perform as listed.
  4. Set the lowest working pressure. Adjustable machines make this easy. The Kärcher HD 6/15-4 Classic, for example, is listed with working pressure adjustable from 70 to 150 bar.
  5. Apply detergent at low pressure, let it dwell, then rinse.
  6. Contain the runoff before you start, not after.

Monday: concrete floors and hardstands

A loading apron with tyre marks and general grime. On a wide flat area, a surface cleaner beats a wand. Freshway's listing for the Kerrick KSC18/W describes a 460 mm stainless steel dome with two rotating jets, rated up to 4,000 PSI and suitable for hot or cold machines, with a skirt that keeps spray under the dome. That gives an even finish and keeps splash off walls and glass.

For edges and steps, switch to the green 25° nozzle. The Dirtkiller turbo nozzle is for stubborn stains on hard, robust surfaces. Freshway's listing for it describes a spinning zero-degree jet and a maximum of 70°C, so it is not the attachment for hot water work. For longer runs, our guide to pressure washer specs for driveways and car parks covers flow and coverage.

Tuesday: the timber caution

A café's timber deck, grey and slippery after winter. This is the job where restraint pays. Timber supplier Abodo's deck cleaning advice says plainly not to waterblast decks, because powerful jets can lift timber fibres and leave a "fluffy" surface more prone to mould and dirt. It recommends standard hose pressure and a stiff brush or broom, with a suitable deck cleaner.

So the cheat-sheet entry for timber is not a nozzle angle. It is a decision: follow the timber supplier's guidance, use hose pressure and a brush, and leave the pressure washer on the trolley. If the owner insists, get the instruction in writing.

Wednesday: grease and oil

A restaurant bin bay and a workshop floor. Grease is where cold water struggles. Apply detergent through the black soap nozzle at low pressure, give it time to work, then rinse with the 25° fan or the surface cleaner. Where hot water is available, it does part of the chemical's job. Freshway's pressure washer buying guide covers when a hot water machine is worth it.

Indoors, standing water becomes the next hazard. The Mosmatic AQUA surface cleaner is listed with integrated recovery that expels the dirty slurry as you wash. Check the requirement, though: its listing recommends a minimum of 15 L/min at 3,000 PSI for the suction to work, which is more than a 10 L/min machine supplies.

Oily runoff needs somewhere to go. Sydney Water's pre-treatment requirements say most motor trades businesses need in-floor bucket traps and an oil water separation system.

Thursday: vehicle washing

A small fleet of utes and vans. Start with detergent through the soap nozzle, then rinse with the white 40° nozzle and keep the lance moving. For a gentler option, the Kränzle rotary washing brush is listed with a 180 mm head on a 1,000 mm lance and needs 10 to 20 L/min, with a maximum water temperature of 35°C, so it is a cold water tool.

One hard rule: the turbo nozzle stays off the vehicles. Freshway's Dirtkiller listing notes it is not safe for vehicle paintwork.

The wash location matters as much as the method. Sydney Water's requirements for a hand wash and pressure spray car wash include a roofed and bunded wash area, in-floor bucket traps, a collection pit of at least 500 litres and an oil water separator.

Friday: building facades and height

A shopfront with painted render, glass and an awning. Work from the ground wherever you can. SafeWork NSW's working at heights guidance says that if you can't work from the ground or solid construction, you must provide adequate protection against the risk of falls. A 1,000 mm brush lance or a 40° fan with an extension reaches a lot of awning without a ladder.

Test a hidden patch first on painted render and old mortar. Freshway's Powerblast 030 kit listing suggests the 25° nozzle for stripping soot from porous brickwork without eroding the mortar, which is a sensible ceiling for masonry. Go wider, not narrower, if the surface shows any sign of wear.

Caveats and limits

Asbestos. Older roofs, eaves and fibre-cement cladding can contain asbestos. SafeWork NSW's safety alert on pressure cleaning asbestos roofs says never to use high-pressure water or compressed air on asbestos products. If in doubt, stop.

Runoff. The NSW EPA says runoff from any washing activity must not enter stormwater drains, and washing of cars, equipment or work floors should be confined to a designated wash bay.

The jet itself. WorkSafe Victoria's high-pressure water jetting alert lists skin piercing, flying debris and flailing hoses among the main risks. It also advises against modifying jetting equipment or attachments without written approval from the maker or another competent person, so no drilled-out nozzles. By its AS 4233.1 classes, the Quadro 599TST at 150 bar and 10 L/min works out to 1,500 bar litres per minute, inside the Class A range.

This sheet is a starting point. Surface condition, coatings and the owner's instructions override it every time.

Vehicles and fleet Soap nozzle, then white 40° fan or rotary brush Cold (brush max 35°C) Keep the lance moving No turbo nozzle on paint
Facades and masonry Rotary brush or 40° fan; 25° as the limit on brick Cold Hidden test patch first Work from the ground; never on asbestos

Frequently asked questions

Won't the 0° nozzle clean concrete faster?

Only on a small spot. Freshway's nozzle listing describes the red 0° as a pinpoint for deep stains. A surface cleaner gives an even finish across a slab.

Can I use the turbo nozzle on a car if I stand back?

No. Freshway's Dirtkiller listing says it is not safe for vehicle paintwork. Use the white 40° nozzle or a rotary brush.

It is only a low shed roof. Is a quick pressure clean fine?

Not if it could contain asbestos. SafeWork NSW says never use high-pressure water on asbestos products.

Does a bigger nozzle number mean more pressure?

Not by itself. Nozzle size is matched to the machine's flow and pressure, so fit the size listed for your machine.
