How to Clean a Fabric Sofa (and Keep It Dry)

A sofa is upholstery with foam inside, and foam holds water for days. That is why the sequence matters more than the product: dry soil out first, treat stains with the minimum liquid, extract, then dry with airflow rather than heat.

Vacuum, spot-treat, extract, dry

Vacuum the sofa thoroughly, including the crevices, before any liquid touches it. Spot-treat stains with a fabric-safe cleaner, agitate gently with a soft brush, extract with minimal water, and dry with air movement. Wet foam is how a sofa ends up smelling of damp within a week.

Prices are Freshway catalogue prices as at 16 September 2026 and are subject to change. Confirm the current price, and whether GST applies, before quoting.

Actichem Spotaway U at A$65.00 for protein and urine staining, with POG and Brownaway for the other stain families. Carpet and upholstery cleaners.

Identify the fabric before you buy anything

The label under the seat cushion tells you what the sofa will tolerate, and the codes matter:

  • W — water-based cleaners only.
  • S — solvent cleaners only; water can leave a ring.
  • WS — either, which covers most modern sofa fabrics.
  • X — vacuum only. No liquid at all.

Where the label is missing, test on the back of the sofa or under a cushion: apply a small amount of the cleaner, wait, and check for colour transfer and for a change in texture when it dries.

Deep cleaning without soaking the foam

  1. Vacuum the whole sofa with an upholstery tool, then the crevices and the seams with a crevice tool.
  2. Pre-spray the fabric lightly, work it in with a soft upholstery brush, and leave it for five minutes.
  3. Extract with a hand tool, short passes and then dry strokes. Do not flood the fabric; the goal is a damp surface, not a wet cushion.
  4. Dry with air movement. An air mover aimed across the sofa, windows open, and the cushions stood on edge. Drying is the step that decides whether the clean was worth doing.

Smells, pets and the honest limits

Odour in a sofa is usually inside the foam, not on the surface. A surface spray hides it for a day; an enzyme product applied so it reaches the foam and then extracted is what actually resolves it. Where the smell has been there for months, or the sofa has been wet through, the foam may need replacing, and no cleaning product will fix a mouldy cushion.

Actichem Brownaway browning remover for carpets and upholstery after wet cleaning
Actichem Brownaway at A$40.00 for the browning that appears on some fabrics as a wet clean dries — treat it before it sets.

Commercial work and drying time

Cleaning sofas for hotels, offices and aged care is a service where drying time is the constraint: the room has to be usable the same day. That means extraction rather than wet vacuuming, an air mover in the van, and a realistic number of sofas per day rather than an optimistic one.

Where the fabric is coded S (solvent only), the work is a dry-solvent process and most water-based extraction is off the table. Check the code before you quote the job.

Leather and bonded leather are a different job

Leather upholstery is a coated material, and the coating is what you are protecting. Clean it with a dedicated leather cleaner and a soft cloth, then condition it, because automotive and furniture leather dries out and cracks at the seams and the headrests. Do not use all-purpose spray and wipe, solvent spotters or an extractor: all three strip the coating, and the damage shows as a patchy finish in daylight.

Bonded leather is the same process with a lower tolerance. The surface is a polyurethane film over reconstituted fibre, and once it peels no product restores it. On bonded leather, dust it, spot-clean with a barely damp cloth, and keep it out of direct sun.

Questions we get asked most

What is the best way to clean a fabric sofa?
Vacuum first, spot-treat with a fabric-safe product, extract with minimal water, and dry with airflow. Check the fabric code before using any liquid.
What is the best way to deep clean a fabric sofa?
A light pre-spray across the whole surface, followed by extraction with a hand tool and a proper dry. Avoid saturating the cushions; the foam is the part that suffers.
What is the best way to clean your fabric couch at home?
A vacuum, a spotter matched to the stain, a soft brush and a wet vacuum with a hand tool. Household detergent leaves residue that attracts soil, and a soaked cushion takes days to dry.
How can I clean my sofa fabric at home without a machine?
Work on the stains rather than the whole sofa: blot, apply the spotter, agitate, blot again, then dry with a fan. Whole-sofa cleaning without extraction rarely improves the result.
How long until the sofa can be used?
When the fabric is dry to the touch and the cushions feel dry when you press them firmly. With airflow, a few hours; without it, plan on overnight.
