We stock 26 Dyson parts and no Dyson vacuums at all. That is deliberate — and it is also why this page is about identifying your machine rather than choosing a new one. If you are shopping for a Dyson, this is the wrong page. If you already own one and something has failed, the next paragraph is the whole answer.
The model code decides the part, not the machine name
Dyson parts are matched by model code, not by product family. A DC14 and a DC07 look similar and share almost no filters. Before ordering anything, find the model code on the rating plate or the handle, then check that code against the part listing. Two minutes here prevents most returns.
Where a listing names a range rather than one model — for example “DC05, DC08, DC19, DC20, DC21, DC29” — the part is common across that whole group. Where it names a single code, it fits that machine only. The two most common ordering mistakes are buying a pre-motor filter when the post-motor filter has failed, and buying a cordless filter for an upright.
Prices are Freshway catalogue prices as at 16 September 2026 and are subject to change. Confirm the current price, and whether GST applies, before ordering.
Why Dyson model codes matter more than the marketing name
Dyson sold the same machine under different names in different markets, and revised internal parts repeatedly within a single model code. That is why a filter that fits one DC07 will not fit another DC07 built two years later.
The practical approach is to work from three identifiers in this order:
- The model code — DC07, DC14, V8, DC58 and so on. Usually on a rating plate underneath, or moulded into the handle.
-
The Dyson part number — formats like
FILTD-35,909545-06or a four-part numeric code. This is what actually identifies the component. - A photograph of the old part — the fastest confirmation when a listing covers a range of models.
If you cannot find the model code, photograph the failed part next to a ruler and send it to us. Identification from a photo is quicker than guessing from a product name. Dyson’s own Australian support site also lists model numbers by product family, which is useful when the rating plate has worn away.
Filters: pre-motor and post-motor are not interchangeable
Every Dyson has two filtration stages, and they fail for different reasons. The pre-motor filter protects the motor from dust and is usually washable. The post-motor filter catches what the motor passes and is often HEPA. Replacing one does not restore the other.

| Post filter assembly | DC26 | Post-motor | A$47.25 |
Two patterns are worth knowing. First, filter kits covering both stages cost roughly the same as buying the two filters separately, so if one stage has failed it is usually worth inspecting the other at the same time. Second, the cordless models (V6 onward) take a different filter family from the uprights, and the two are not interchangeable despite similar appearance.
When the motor fails, and what replacement involves
Motor failure usually announces itself as a change in sound before it becomes a loss of suction — a rising pitch, a burning smell, or a machine that runs for a minute and stops. By the time suction drops noticeably, damage is usually advanced.

Motor replacement is a genuine repair rather than a consumable swap, and it is only worth doing on a machine whose housing, hose and brush are otherwise sound. On a cordless model, the battery pack usually reaches end of life before the motor does, and a battery that is no longer produced is the point at which the machine becomes uneconomic.
Hoses, wands and floor tools
Hose assemblies fail at the joints, not in the middle. The U-bend behind the handle and the machine-end connection take the most stress, and a split there produces the classic symptom of strong suction at the head and almost none at the wand.
Our vacuum parts and accessories range covers hoses, rods and wands across the major commercial brands as well as Dyson, and the dust bag range covers the bagged models. If the diagnosis is uncertain, our service team can test the machine rather than sell you a part on a guess.
Genuine or compatible: what the difference actually is
Both appear in our range, and the listings say which is which. The distinction is narrower than the price gap suggests.
| Genuine | Compatible | |
|---|---|---|
| Fit | Exact by part number | Exact where the supplier has reverse-engineered correctly; check the model list carefully |
| Filtration media | Specified and tested by Dyson | Varies by supplier; quality ranges widely |
| Where it matters most | HEPA post-motor filters on allergy-sensitive households | Washable pre-motor filters and non-critical plastics |
| Price | Higher | Typically 20–50 per cent lower |
The honest guidance: compatible is a reasonable choice for pre-motor filters, brush bars and plastic parts. For the post-motor HEPA stage, where the whole point is what the filter retains, the specification is doing the work and the genuine part is easier to defend.
Repair or replace: the honest threshold
Dyson repairs make sense up to a point, and the calculation is simple enough to do in your head.
- Filter, brush bar or hose — always repair. These are consumables, and the cost is a fraction of a replacement machine.
- Motor on an upright — usually repair, provided the housing and hose are sound and the part is still supplied.
- Motor or battery on a cordless — compare the part cost against a current equivalent. Once a machine is two battery generations old, the parts usually cost more than the remaining life is worth.
Where the machine is being used commercially rather than domestically, the calculation changes: a domestic Dyson is not built for daily trade use, and repeated repair is usually a sign that a commercial machine is the better long-term answer. Our commercial cleaning machines range covers that side of the decision.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I find my Dyson model number?
- Look for a rating plate on the underside of the machine or moulded into the handle area. Cordless models often carry it on the battery housing or behind the bin. The code you need is the alphanumeric one beginning DC, V or SV — not the serial number.
- Are compatible Dyson filters as good as genuine ones?
- It depends on the part. For washable pre-motor filters and plastic components, a compatible part usually performs identically. For post-motor HEPA filters, specification and media quality vary between suppliers, and that is the stage where the difference is most likely to show.
- How often should Dyson filters be replaced?
- Washable pre-motor filters typically need washing monthly and replacing every 12 months or so. Post-motor HEPA filters are not washable and generally last longer, but should be replaced when the machine smells or suction drops after the pre-motor filter has been cleaned.
- Is it worth repairing an old Dyson?
- For filters, hoses and brush bars, yes without hesitation. For a motor on an upright, usually yes. For a motor or battery on a cordless machine that is two generations old, compare the part price against a current equivalent before committing.
- Do you sell Dyson vacuums?
- No. We supply Dyson parts only — filters, motors, hoses, brush bars and switches. If you are buying a new machine rather than repairing one, our commercial range is the more relevant starting point.
