Air Movers and Carpet Dryers: How to Size and Run Them
A carpet dryer is the machine that decides whether a carpet clean is a one-visit job or a two-visit job. The equipment is simple, which is exactly why it is usually chosen badly: sites buy on wattage, then wonder why a room is still damp the next morning.
What an air mover actually does
An air mover is a high-velocity fan that pushes a broad, directed stream of air across a wet floor to accelerate evaporation. Unlike an ordinary fan it is built for continuous duty, it can be angled, and its job is to move air across the surface rather than to cool people in the room.
Prices are Freshway catalogue prices as at 16 September 2026 and are subject to change. Confirm the current price, and whether GST applies, before quoting.
Sizing: count machines per room, not watts per building
The usual industry guide is one air mover per room or per defined area, angled so the air moves along the wall and across the floor rather than straight at a doorway. Sizing by total floor area fails, because air does not travel through a partition.
| Machine | Rating | Price |
|---|---|---|
| XPOWER P-230AT mini air mover | 175 W, 1/4 HP compact | A$299.00 |
| XPOWER X-400 utility air mover | 350 W, 1/2 HP | A$429.00 |
| XPOWER X-600AC professional air mover | 520 W, 3/4 HP | A$539.00 |
| XPOWER X-800C multipurpose air mover | 700 W, 1 HP | A$599.00 |
| XPOWER X-800HC heavy duty, wheels and handle | 700 W, 1 HP | A$599.00 |
| XPOWER PL-700A low profile air mover | 1/3 HP, 1000 CFM | A$599.00 |
| XPOWER X-47ATR Turbo-Pro axial | 225 W, 2800 CFM, sealed motor | A$679.00 |
| Minuteman AD100 three speed blower | 1 HP | A$849.00 |
| Karcher AB 20 Ec air mover | 1.004-062.0 | A$1,099.00 |
Read the CFM figure before the wattage. A low-profile machine that slides under furniture is often the right answer in an occupied office, and a sealed-motor axial unit is the right answer where dust and moisture would otherwise reach the motor.
Air movers, air scrubbers and dehumidifiers are three jobs
The confusion here costs sites money, because the three machines are sold in the same aisle.
- Air mover — moves air across a surface to speed evaporation. The drying machine.
- Air scrubber — filters airborne particles, used where dust or odour has to be captured rather than moved. Our range includes HEPA and carbon filter options for the XPOWER X-3400.
- Dehumidifier — removes water from the air, which is what stops moisture migrating back into the carpet in a closed room.
In a sealed room, moving air without removing humidity simply recirculates moisture. That is the practical reason a drying setup is usually an air mover plus a dehumidifier rather than two air movers.
How long should a carpet take to dry
The honest answer is that it depends on four variables, and the machine only controls two of them: how much water was left in the pile by the extraction pass, the airflow across the surface, the humidity and air exchange in the room, and the carpet construction. Get the extraction right with multiple dry passes and the rest of the drying job is half solved before the air mover is switched on.
Setting up so the drying actually works
- Extract again before you dry. A second slow extraction pass removes more water than an hour of airflow will.
- Angle along the wall. High-velocity air moving across the surface beats air aimed into the middle of a room.
- Stagger the machines. Overlapping patterns at the room edges cover more floor than machines side by side in the centre.
- Control the humidity. Close the room only if you are also removing moisture from the air.
- Lift the pile. Air cannot dry fibre it cannot reach, so groom the carpet as it dries.
Electrical safety, which is the real risk
Air movers run unattended, often overnight, in rooms that were wet minutes earlier. That combination makes the electrical supply the main hazard rather than the machine. SafeWork NSW covers the duties for electrical work and equipment in its electrical and power guidance; in practice that means residual current devices on every lead, inspection and tagging kept current, leads routed so they are not sitting in water, and no daisy-chained power boards on a wet floor.
The chemicals that were used on the carpet matter to the drying setup as well; the chemicals and other substances reference covers handling and labelling where products are decanted into sprayers.
Maintenance and what fails
Air movers are simple machines and they fail in three places: the motor bearing, the switch and the housing. Keep the intake clear, store them dry, and check the plug and lead at every use. Where a machine starts squealing, stop using it rather than running it to failure, because the bearing noise is the failure signalling. Our carpet and upholstery range covers the machines these dryers work with, and service and repair covers the rest.
Questions we get asked most
- What does an air mover do?
- It produces a high-velocity, directed stream of air across a surface. In carpet cleaning the purpose is to accelerate evaporation from the pile and backing so a room can be returned to service sooner.
- Is an air mover better than a fan?
- For drying, yes. A household fan moves air gently and is not built for continuous duty. An air mover is designed to run for hours, can be angled at the floor, and pushes a far wider column of air across the surface being dried.
- Do carpet dryers work?
- They do, provided the extraction was completed properly and the humidity in the room is managed. Moving air over a saturated carpet in a closed, humid room achieves much less than the machine’s airflow figure suggests.
- What is the quickest way to dry a carpet?
- Extract again with slow dry passes, then run air movers angled along the walls with the pile groomed, and remove moisture from the air with a dehumidifier or ventilation. In practice the extraction pass contributes more than the drying equipment.
- Where can I buy an air mover?
- From us, in Arncliffe in Sydney, with Australia-wide shipping and a trade account for regular buyers. We stock XPOWER, Minuteman and Karcher air movers from A$299.00 and the filters they use.
