Karcher Kranzle Kerrick Makita: Compare by Parameters Not Logos
Line up bar, L/min and power first, then let the badge break the tie.

On Freshway's own listings, the Makita moves more water than the Kärcher with the bigger pressure figure. The Kärcher HD 4/10 X Plus Classic is listed at up to 145 bar and 400 litres per hour. The Makita HW140 is listed at 130 bar working pressure and 500 litres per hour. Multiply bar by litres per minute, the figure Australian safety guidance uses to class these machines, and the Makita comes out at about 1,083 against about 967 for the Kärcher.
That does not make the Makita the right buy. It means the logo told you less than you thought. This guide compares Kärcher, Kränzle, Makita and Kerrick the way an operator experiences them: what comes out of the gun, what plugs into the wall, what happens when you let go of the trigger, and who fixes it when it stops.

Karcher Kranzle pressure washer compare: the short answer
To compare Karcher, Kranzle and other pressure washers fairly, line up working pressure in bar, flow in L/min, bar × L/min, power draw, motor speed, bypass protection and local parts support. Brand reputation then becomes a tiebreaker. Freshway's compact single-phase examples from three brands sit between 840 and about 1,083 bar × L/min.
The scorecard below works with any brand, including ones not covered here.
A brand-agnostic scorecard
"Which one do I pick?" Score each machine on these eight lines, 0 to 2 against your job, before looking at the badge:
- Working pressure in bar. Use the working figure, not the maximum.
- Flow in L/min. Divide L/h by 60. 400 L/h is about 6.7 L/min; 500 L/h is about 8.3.
- bar × L/min. WorkSafe Victoria, summarising AS 4233.1, gives Class A as 800 to 5,600 bar litres per minute and Class B as above 5,600.
- Power. Input watts ÷ 240 V gives a rough current. 2,300 W ÷ 240 is about 9.6 A; 3,400 W ÷ 240 is about 14.2 A, which needs a 15 A circuit.
- Pump and motor. Kärcher Australia says the 4-pole low-speed motor on the HD 6/15-4 M Classic means less pump wear. Note the drive and the RPM.
- Bypass protection. The Pumps Australia guidance manual says not to run more than 2 to 3 minutes without pulling the trigger. Motor shut-off or pressure relief changes that risk.
- Water in. Maximum inlet temperature and whether the pump can self-prime from a tank.
- Parts and service. Who stocks seals, hoses and fittings for this model near you.
Typical strengths, as the listings show them
These are patterns in Freshway's listings, not brand rankings. Each brand's range is wider than the examples.
- Kärcher spans compact professional machines to crankshaft Classic models. The HD 4/10 X Plus Classic is listed at 17.7 kg with a hose reel and automatic pressure relief; the HD 6/15-4 Classic with a ceramic-piston crankshaft pump and 3.4 kW single-phase motor.
- Kränzle listings lean on Total Stop, which switches the motor off when the trigger is released, plus forged brass pump heads and ceramic-coated pistons. The KHD7/122TS is listed with a 1400 RPM 4-pole motor on a 10 A plug.
- Makita covers corded and cordless. The HW140 is listed with a three axial-piston wobble-plate pump and brass head. The cordless DHW080 runs on two 18 V batteries and can self-prime from a static source, including its storage box used as a water tank.
- Kerrick on Freshway is a parts and accessories story, covered in the next section.
Parts and service: where Kerrick fits
"Can I still get Kerrick?" Kerrick's web address now leads to a Nilfisk Australia Kerrick page, which lists Kerrick electric, petrol and hot water pressure washers along with parts and accessories. At the time of writing, Freshway's Kerrick range covers surface cleaners, carpet extractors and parts rather than pressure washers. The KSC18/W 460 mm surface cleaner, for example, is listed for up to 4000 PSI. Freshway's Kerrick parts guide maps what still fits older machines.
Service support is a parameter too. Freshway's service and repairs page names Kärcher, Kerrick and Makita among the brands its Sydney workshop works on, with pump testing and pressure diagnostics for pressure washers and a quote before work begins. Kränzle is not named on that page, so ask before booking one in. WorkSafe Victoria's summary of AS 4233.1 says only the maker, its agent or competent persons should repair or maintain high-pressure water jetting equipment.
Accessories follow the same rule. Pumps Australia says to know your machine's maximum operating pressure and flow before buying replacement parts, so the accessory matches the machine. Quick-connect systems differ between brands too: Freshway lists the KHD7/122TS with Kränzle's D12 system.
Matching machines to jobs
Start from the job, not the brand:
- Ute-based trade work on a standard outlet. Compare the KHD7/122TS (7 L/min, Total Stop, listed for a 10 A plug), the HD 4/10 X Plus Classic (17.7 kg, hose reel, 1.8 kW) and the HW140 (500 L/h, 10 m hose on a reel, 2.3 kW). Confirm the plug rating on each product page before ordering.
- Daily fleet or wash-bay work with a 15 A circuit. Compare the HD 6/15-4 Classic (crankshaft pump, up to 600 L/h) with the KHD10/122TS (10 L/min, Total Stop, 15 A plug).
- No tap at the job. Look at self-priming machines such as the DHW080, and accept lower flow.
- Large flat concrete. Pair a higher-flow machine with a surface cleaner rated at or above its pressure, such as the Kerrick range.
Spec table method: one row per machine
All figures come from Freshway product pages. Flow is converted to L/min where the listing gives L/h, and bar × L/min uses working pressure.
| Machine | Working pressure | Flow | bar × L/min | Power as listed | Pump and motor as listed | Bypass protection as listed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kärcher HD 4/10 X Plus Classic | 100 to 145 bar | 400 L/h (6.7 L/min) | about 967 | 1.8 kW single phase | 3-piston axial, induction motor | Automatic pressure relief |
| Kärcher HD 6/15-4 Classic | 70 to 150 bar | 450 to 600 L/h (up to 10 L/min) | 1,500 | 3.4 kW single phase | Crankshaft, ceramic pistons | Not stated |
| Kränzle KHD7/122TS | Up to 120 bar | 7 L/min | 840 | 240 V, 10 A plug | Brass head, 1400 RPM 4-pole | Total Stop |
| Kränzle KHD10/122TS | 120 bar | 10 L/min | 1,200 | 240 V, 15 A plug | Brass head, 2800 RPM | Total Stop |
| Makita HW140 | 130 bar | 500 L/h (8.3 L/min) | about 1,083 | 2.3 kW, 240 V | 3 axial-piston wobble plate, brass head | Auto safety valve with low-pressure bypass |
| Makita DHW080 (cordless) | 8.0 MPa maximum (80 bar) | Up to 380 L/h | Not comparable (maximum only) | 2 × 18 V batteries | Brushless motor | Not stated |
The three compact single-phase machines, one per brand, sit in a narrow band from 840 to about 1,083. Move to a 15 A circuit and the Kärcher Classic and Kränzle KHD10 both reach 10 L/min. The differences that remain are motor speed, bypass protection and service, which is where the trial below earns its time.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Comparing one brand's maximum pressure with another's working pressure.
- Reading L/h as L/min. 500 L/h is 8.3 L/min, not 500.
- Buying a 15 A machine for a site with 10 A outlets.
- Mixing quick-connect systems across a fleet without checking fittings.
- Assuming a brand is serviced locally because it is sold locally.
- Fitting accessories rated below the machine's maximum operating pressure.
Summary: what to take away
- Compare on working pressure, flow and bar × L/min first.
- Check power draw against the outlets you actually have.
- Note motor speed and bypass protection for machines that run long shifts.
- Count parts and service support as part of the specification.
- Use brand as the tiebreaker, not the starting point.
Frequently asked questions
Is Kärcher or Kränzle better for commercial work?
Neither by logo alone. Compare working pressure, flow, motor speed and bypass protection model by model. Freshway's compact single-phase examples from three brands sit between 840 and about 1,083 bar × L/min.
Are Makita pressure washers only for home use?
Not on the numbers. Freshway lists the corded HW140 at 130 bar working pressure and 500 L/h with a brass pump head. Check duty and service support against your workload.
Can I still buy Kerrick pressure washers?
Kerrick's web address now leads to a Nilfisk Australia page listing Kerrick pressure washers. Freshway's Kerrick range currently covers surface cleaners, carpet extractors and parts.
Does higher pressure always mean faster cleaning?
No. Flow carries soil away. Multiply working pressure in bar by flow in L/min to compare machines on one number, then trial them on your own surfaces.

Trial it on your own site
A short trial settles what the table cannot:
- Check the water. The Pumps Australia manual asks for twice the machine's stated flow at the supply, so 20 L/min for a 10 L/min machine.
- Check the circuit. Plug into the outlet you will really use, on a tested lead. SafeWork NSW says plug-in equipment exposed to moisture must be regularly inspected and tested by a competent person.
- Time a standard area. Same surface, same nozzle angle, same operator, for each machine.
- Release the trigger. Listen to what the machine does in bypass, and watch whether the motor stops.
- Ask the operator. Gun weight, hose handling and how easily the machine moves in and out of the vehicle.
