How to Clean Shower Screen Glass Properly

Shower screens go cloudy for two reasons that need different chemistry: soap scum, which is alkaline-resistant body oil and soap, and hard-water scale, which is mineral. Most products handle one and make the other look better for a day.

Soap scum first, then acid

Remove soap scum with an alkaline or neutral bathroom cleaner, then descale the mineral film with an acid product. Finish with a squeegee after every shower, because the film is deposited by evaporating water — remove the water and the film does not form. Keep the acid wet rather than letting it dry.

Prices are Freshway catalogue prices as at 16 September 2026 and are subject to change. Confirm the current price, and whether GST applies, before quoting.

CRL 1973 at A$10.00 for the glass finish; the soap scum and scale underneath need their own chemistry first. Cleaning chemicals.

The method, in order

  1. Wet the glass with warm water to soften the film.
  2. Apply the bathroom or shower cleaner and leave it for its dwell time. Agitate with a non-scratch pad, not steel wool.
  3. Rinse, then look at the screen from the side. What is left is mineral scale.
  4. Apply the acid descaler at label dilution, leave it for a few minutes, and agitate again. Do not let it dry, and rinse thoroughly.
  5. Finish with glass cleaner and a squeegee, working top to bottom in overlapping strokes.

Cloudy film that will not come off

If the glass stays hazy after both passes, the scale has etched into the surface, or the screen has a factory coating that has been worn away or damaged by an abrasive cleaner. Neither is a cleaning problem: etched glass can sometimes be polished with a specialist compound, and a screen with a failed coating is usually a replacement. Be honest about that in a quote — clients expect a cleaner to fix what a cleaning method cannot.

How hotels keep shower glass clear

Not with a stronger product — with frequency and a squeegee. Housekeeping dries the screen at every service, and the deep clean happens on a schedule rather than when the glass looks bad. Water left to evaporate deposits its minerals; water removed leaves nothing behind. Where a building is on hard water, the schedule moves to weekly and includes the acid pass.

What not to use on a shower screen

  • Abrasive creams and scouring pads. They scratch the glass and strip any coating.
  • Strong acid left to dry. It etches glass and attacks the chrome frame and the seal.
  • Bleach as a general cleaner. It whitens the grout and does nothing to scum or scale, and it degrades the silicone at the screen base.

One more: the track and the seal along the bottom of the screen are where mould establishes itself, so clean them at the same time — the same scale and scum chemistry applies to the shower head and fittings if the jets have started spraying sideways.

Prevention: coatings, squeegees and the water itself

New screens sometimes come with a hydrophobic coating that helps water sheet off, and those coatings are damaged by abrasive pads, strong acid and heavy alkaline cleaners. If a screen is coated, use a neutral bathroom cleaner for routine work and keep the acid for occasional descaling at a weak dilution.

The two habits that matter more than any product: a squeegee kept in the shower and used after the last person, and a microfibre cloth for the tapware. On hard water, add a monthly acid pass on the screen and the shower head, because scale deposits build on each other and the first layer is the cheapest one to remove.

Questions we get asked most

What is the best thing to clean a glass shower screen?
A bathroom cleaner for the soap scum, an acid descaler for the mineral film, and a squeegee or glass cleaner to finish. Two chemistries, because there are two problems.
How to remove cloudy film from a glass shower door?
Treat it as scale: acid descaler at label dilution, dwell, agitate, rinse. If the haze remains, the glass is etched or the coating has failed, and that is not a cleaning job.
How do hotels keep their shower glass so clean?
They dry it after every use and deep clean it on a schedule. Removing the water before it evaporates stops the film forming in the first place.
What’s the best way to clean glass shower doors?
Work top to bottom in sections, keep the acid wet rather than letting it dry, rinse thoroughly, and finish with a squeegee in overlapping strokes.
Can I use vinegar on a shower screen?
It softens light scale, and it is slow and weak compared with a formulated descaler. On a screen that has been cloudy for months, vinegar is not going to remove it.
