How to Clean a Bathroom in the Right Order

A bathroom cleans quickly or slowly depending on the order you work in. The difference is simple: chemicals need dwell time, and anything you clean early gets re-soiled by whatever you do next. Work top-down, dry-to-wet, and let the products sit while you do something else.

Start with the chemistry sitting, not you scrubbing

Spray the toilet bowl and the shower first so the chemistry can work while you do the dry work. Move from the cleanest surface to the dirtiest, finish with the toilet, and use separate cloths for the toilet, the basin and the glass. The products do the cleaning; you do the sequencing.

Prices are Freshway catalogue prices as at 16 September 2026 and are subject to change. Confirm the current price, and whether GST applies, before quoting.

The order that saves the most time

  1. Ventilate and clear the surfaces. Fan on, window open, and the bench cleared so you can actually reach the corners.
  2. Apply the dwell-time products first: bowl cleaner in the toilet, descaler or shower cleaner on the screen and tiles, and mould treatment on any grout lines.
  3. Do the dry work while they sit: dust the exhaust vent and the light fitting, wipe the mirror, clean the window, and dry-dust the skirting.
  4. Wash the basin and bench with a neutral or antibacterial product, then the tapware (which is where scale shows).
  5. Return to the shower: agitate the screen, tiles and floor, rinse, and squeegee.
  6. Finish with the toilet β€” bowl brush, then the seat, then the rim, then the floor around it. Toilet last means you are not carrying it onto anything else.
  7. Floor last, from the far corner out of the door, then check the bin and restock paper.

Colour-coded cloths, and why it matters

Four colours cover a bathroom properly: one for the toilet, one for the basin and taps, one for the screen and tiles, and one for the mirror and glass. Crossing them is how a bathroom looks clean and still fails a hygiene swab β€” the toilet cloth moving to the basin is the classic error.

The 20-minute rule and the 5-5-5 idea

Both are timeboxing ideas rather than chemistry. The 20-minute approach gives each zone a fixed slice of time so the job does not sprawl; the 5-5-5 version splits it into five minutes on the toilet and shower, five on the basin and surfaces, and five on the floor and finishing. They work because a bathroom is small: the constraint is the order and the dwell time, not the effort.

Where they fail is on scale and mould, which need contact time rather than a deadline. If the grout is black or the screen is cloudy, it is a separate job with a longer dwell, not something to rush inside a five-minute block.

Bathrooms in commercial buildings

The routine scales up but the order does not change. On a commercial round, add restocking (paper, soap, bin liners), a bin and urinal check (bins and urinals), and a documented record. Where the building has a cleaning specification, the frequency per fixture is usually written into it, and the cloth colour code is what an auditor looks at first.

Chemical handling and safety data sheets sit under SafeWork NSW chemicals and other substances, and the relevant practical controls in a bathroom are gloves, ventilation when using acid on scale, and never decanting into an unlabelled bottle.

Questions we get asked most

What is the 20 minute rule in cleaning?
It is a timeboxing method: give each zone a fixed slice β€” about 20 minutes for a bathroom β€” and work to the clock so the job does not expand. It works for maintenance cleaning, not for scale or mould.
What is the best thing to clean a bathroom with?
Three products cover it: a bathroom or shower cleaner for tiles and screens, an antibacterial cleaner for basins and surfaces, and an acid descaler for scale. Add a mouldicide if the grout is black.
What are common bathroom cleaning mistakes?
Cleaning the toilet first and then the basin with the same cloth, not giving products dwell time, using abrasive pads on chrome and screens, and cleaning the floor before the toilet.
What is the 5-5-5 rule for cleaning?
Five minutes on the toilet and shower, five on the basin and surfaces, five on the floor and finishing. Like the 20-minute version it is a pacing tool; scale and mould need their own time.
How often should a bathroom be cleaned?
Domestically, a quick clean weekly with a deeper clean monthly. In an office or a retail building, daily for high-use washrooms with a scheduled deeper clean weekly.
