Why Does a Pressure Washer Keep Cutting Out? Electric and Petrol Causes

Restricted water supply is the top cause of cut-outs. Protect the pump properly.

A pressure washer that starts and then cuts out may be operating a normal total-stop function, losing electrical power or fuel, overheating, sensing inadequate flow, or protecting itself from a fault. First distinguish “stops when the trigger is released” from “stops while spraying”. Isolate the machine before checks and never bypass a switch, overload, interlock or protective device.

Is the shutdown normal total-stop operation?

Many electric pressure washers stop the motor when the trigger closes and restart when it opens. That reduces idle running and is not the same as cutting out during active spraying. Read the model manual and observe exactly when the stop occurs.

If the machine restarts predictably with the trigger and output remains stable, the system may be normal. If it stops with the trigger held, fails to restart, trips supply protection or produces heat, odour or abnormal noise, treat it as a fault.

Record the trigger and timing pattern

  • Does it stop immediately or only after several minutes?
  • Does the trigger position control the event?
  • Does a circuit breaker, RCD or overload operate?
  • Does pressure fade, pulse or remain strong before shutdown?
  • For petrol units, does engine speed falter before stopping?
  • Did the problem begin after a new lead, hose, nozzle or accessory?

Kärcher Australia separates failure to turn on, hunting or pulsating, leakage and other electric pressure-washer symptoms in its support guidance. Using those distinct symptom paths prevents an operator from applying a low-pressure remedy to an electrical shutdown.

What should you check on an electric pressure washer?

Confirm the approved power source, plug, cable and any extension-lead requirements in the manual. Remove coiled, undersized or damaged leads from service. Keep connections dry and do not repeatedly reset a protective device. If the RCD or breaker operates again, leave the unit isolated for competent electrical assessment.

RYOBI Australia notes that extension-lead condition or suitability can affect operation in addition to water-supply and priming issues. Use only the supply arrangement permitted for the model; an adaptor or longer lead is not a diagnostic fix.

Check airflow, water flow and operating load

Place the machine in its required operating orientation with ventilation openings clear. Confirm adequate inlet flow, remove hose kinks, clean the user-serviceable inlet filter and purge air. A restricted supply or unsuitable nozzle can make the unit cycle or overload rather than deliver steady output.

Pattern Possible area Safe response
Stops only when trigger closes Total-stop system Confirm normal behaviour in the manual
Stops after a similar run time Heat, ventilation or overload Shut down, cool as directed and correct external conditions
Breaker or RCD trips Electrical fault or unsuitable supply Do not reset repeatedly; arrange competent assessment
Output pulses before stopping Water restriction or inlet air Use the supply and priming checks before service

How do petrol causes differ?

For an engine-driven washer, check only the operator items specified by its maker: correct fresh fuel, fuel-valve and choke position, oil level or low-oil protection, air intake and ventilation. Operate outdoors in the required position and keep exhaust away from people and openings.

Do not adjust the governor, carburettor or pump unloader to keep the engine running. Fuel leakage, persistent hunting, smoke, abnormal heat or repeated low-oil shutdown requires the applicable engine or pressure-washer service process.

Use a safe restart sequence

After correcting one permitted external condition, reconnect in the specified order, establish water flow and purge air before starting. Test briefly in an isolated area. If the same shutdown returns, stop; repeated restarts can worsen overheating or electrical and pump damage.

Aussie Pumps’ troubleshooting chart assigns some motor-stop and low-pressure actions to the user and others to a service agent. The boundary depends on the exact machine, so keep the model and serial number with the fault record.

Escalate protective shutdowns instead of bypassing them

Arrange authorised service for repeated electrical trips, damaged cables, burning smell, pump or fuel leaks, abnormal vibration, controls that fail, or shutdown after approved supply and maintenance checks. Safe Work Australia’s high-pressure water-jetting guidance reinforces inspection, isolation and safe equipment condition; defeating a control removes a layer designed to limit harm.

Freshway’s commercial pressure washer collection can support model comparison, and pressure washer accessories can be checked for exact compatibility. Do not replace a machine or part until the symptom and operating setup are recorded.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my electric pressure washer stop when I release the trigger?

That can be normal total-stop operation. Confirm the behaviour in the model manual and distinguish it from stopping while spraying.

Can an extension lead make a pressure washer cut out?

An unsuitable, damaged or coiled lead can contribute to voltage drop or heat. Follow the manufacturer’s lead specifications and electrical controls.

Should I keep resetting a tripped breaker?

No. Isolate the equipment and arrange competent assessment if the protection trips again after the approved setup has been checked.
