Commercial Pressure Washing Safety Checklist for Australian Workplaces
A workplace pressure-washing checklist should confirm job suitability, trained workers, site isolation, surface condition, equipment ratings, water and power, chemicals, PPE, wastewater and emergency arrangements before the trigger is pulled. It supports a task-specific risk assessment and manufacturer instructions; it does not replace them.
What must be decided before arriving on site?
- Define the surface, contamination, acceptance standard and excluded work.
- Confirm whether pressure washing is suitable and who approved the method.
- Assign competent workers and supervision for the equipment and risk level.
- Review relevant site rules, permits, emergency procedures and environmental controls.
- Check weather, access, water, power, drainage and operating hours.
- Provide current product instructions and SDS documents where chemicals are used.
Inspect the work area and isolate other people
Walk the whole spray and runoff zone, including the opposite side of an object being cleaned. Identify pedestrians, vehicles, doors, blind corners, falling debris, fragile surfaces, sharps, biological material, overhead services, electrical equipment, confined areas and work at height.
Install barriers and signs before setup creates hoses or wet surfaces. Tell nearby workers what will happen and how long access is restricted. Use a spotter or communication system where the operator cannot see every entry.

Complete the pre-start without pressurised shortcuts
- Position the machine on a stable surface and route hoses away from damage and traffic.
- Connect and check the water supply before starting the pump as instructed.
- Fit the approved nozzle and secure quick connections.
- Flush air from the system under the manual.
- Test controls at the lowest practical setting within the isolated area.
- Stop immediately if leakage, surging, abnormal noise or damaged equipment appears.
Which PPE is required?
PPE must follow the risk assessment, pressure and temperature, chemical information, noise, debris and site conditions. It may include eye or face protection, suitable footwear, gloves, hearing protection and protective clothing. Ordinary clothing or sunglasses should not be assumed adequate.
PPE is the final layer, not the whole control system. Isolation, lower-energy methods, guards, safe equipment, ventilation and containment should be considered before relying on what the operator wears.
Control the jet throughout the cleaning task
Maintain stable footing, two-handed control where required and awareness of hose movement. Never direct the jet at people, animals, electrical equipment or an unverified surface. Do not use the spray to clean PPE while worn. Release stored pressure and isolate energy before changing a nozzle or inspecting a blockage.
Stop when a barrier is breached, visibility falls, wind spreads mist, runoff escapes, the surface changes unexpectedly or the equipment behaves abnormally. Reassess controls before restarting.
How should chemicals and wastewater be managed?
Use only approved chemicals at the labelled dilution and application. Keep containers identified, prevent incompatible mixing and provide spill and first-aid arrangements from the SDS and site procedure. Pressure can aerosolise product, contamination and debris, so inhalation and drift require assessment.
Identify whether runoff contains oil, paint, biological material or chemicals. Contain, collect and dispose of it under site and local requirements. A clear-looking rinse is not proof it may enter stormwater.
Close, record and store the equipment
Shut down, isolate and release pressure under the manual. Inspect and clean equipment and PPE, record faults, store chemicals and hoses correctly, and remove barriers only after slip, access and debris hazards are resolved. Report surface damage, incidents and incomplete work.

A blank tick beside “safe” is less useful than evidence that the named control was checked and remained effective during the task.
Frequently asked questions
Does every pressure-washing job need a SWMS?
Not automatically. Determine the applicable legal and site requirements, including whether the task forms part of high-risk construction work. A risk assessment and safe procedure may still be required.
Can a damaged hose be temporarily repaired?
Do not improvise a patch. Isolate and tag the component, then replace or repair it only through an approved method for the rated system.
Is pressure washing safe when working alone?
Only if the risk assessment supports it and communication, emergency response and site controls are adequate. Higher-risk work may require additional people.
