Makita Cleaning and Outdoor Equipment: One Battery Platform Across Both Jobs

Makita is the only brand in our range that covers both commercial cleaning equipment and outdoor power equipment on a single battery platform. That is the reason cleaning and grounds teams standardise on it, and it is also the reason the model decision matters more than the brand decision.

Start here: pick the battery platform, then the tools

Makita sells cleaning and outdoor tools across three battery systems: 18 V LXT for light work, 18 V×2 for tools that need more power, and 40 V Max XGT for heavy commercial duty. Choose the platform first, because every tool you buy afterwards is locked to it, then choose the tools within that platform.

This is the decision that distinguishes a well-planned kit from an expensive one. Buying a single 40 V tool for one job means carrying two battery systems and two chargers; buying everything on 18 V means accepting less power on the heaviest tools. Both are workable, but the choice should be made once.

Prices are Freshway catalogue prices as at 16 September 2026 and are subject to change. Confirm the current price, and whether GST applies, before quoting.

Cleaning equipment on the Makita platform

Model Type Price
DCL180ZB 18 V mobile stick vacuum Stick vacuum, body only A$169.00
DCL180Z 18 V mobile stick vacuum Stick vacuum A$169.00
DCL182Z 18 V mobile stick vacuum Stick vacuum A$179.00
DCL181FZWX 18 V mobile stick vacuum Stick vacuum, kit form A$229.00
DVC350 18 V dry vacuum Dry vacuum, tool only A$369.00
HW1200 1,740 PSI high pressure water cleaner Pressure cleaner A$449.00

The naming convention is worth learning before ordering. A model ending in Z is body only — no battery, no charger. A model ending in ZB is also body only. Kits carry suffixes such as FZWX and include batteries and a charger. Buying a Z model expecting a usable tool is a common and avoidable mistake.

Outdoor power equipment on the same platform

Model Type Price
DUB186 18 V LXT blower Handheld blower A$289.00
EE400MP edge trimmer attachment Split-shaft attachment A$369.00
EN401MP pole hedge trimmer attachment Split-shaft attachment A$389.00
UC4041A 1,800 W electric chainsaw, 400 mm Chainsaw, corded A$390.72
Multi-function blower attachment Split-shaft attachment A$279.00
P-76934 Pro Series chainsaw chaps, small Safety equipment A$270.00

The split-shaft system is the piece most buyers miss. One power unit drives a trimmer, an edger, a pole hedge trimmer and a multi-function blower as separate attachments, which means a grounds team can cover four jobs with one motor and a set of attachments rather than four machines. For a cleaning business that also maintains grounds, it is the most cost-effective route into outdoor equipment.

Common problems, and what they usually mean

Symptom Usual cause What to check
Trimmer line keeps breaking Line diameter too thick for the head, or the head is overloaded Match line diameter to the head specification
Blower loses power Blocked intake or a clogged impeller Clear the intake before suspecting the battery
Vacuum suction drops Loaded filter or a full dust bag Filter and bag first, motor last
Runtime much shorter than quoted Battery age, cold conditions, or the high power setting Test with a known-good battery of the same capacity
Tool will not start Battery not fully seated, or terminal contamination Reseat the battery and inspect the terminals

Four of those five are maintenance rather than failure, which is the pattern across battery tools generally. The fifth — a battery that has genuinely reached end of life — is the point at which the platform choice pays off, because a Makita battery is replaced individually and stays usable across every tool you own.

Accessories, filters and consumables

Makita consumables are model-specific and are worth stocking ahead rather than ordering reactively. The items we see ordered repeatedly are filters and bags for the vacuums, blower nozzles and brushes, and replacement line and cutting heads for the trimmers.

Our Makita range covers tools, batteries, chargers and consumables, and the batteries and chargers range covers the platform components separately.

Choosing between 18 V, 18 V×2 and 40 V

The three platforms are not tiers of the same thing, and the naming is the only clue to how they differ.

Makita battery platforms compared
Platform How it works Where it fits
18 V LXT One 18 V battery Lightest tools; the widest range and the cheapest way in
18 V×2 Two 18 V batteries in series Tools that need more power — larger vacuums, blowers and mowers
40 V Max XGT A separate 40 V battery system Heavy commercial duty; the highest power tier

The important consequence is that LXT batteries do not fit XGT tools. A team that buys one 40 V tool has committed to a second battery system and a second charger, which is why the platform decision should be made once, at the start, and applied across the whole kit.

What to hold as spares

Battery tool downtime is almost always a consumable, and holding a small set of spares removes most of it.

  • Filters and dust bags for the vacuums — the most frequently ordered Makita consumables in our range.
  • Trimmer line and cutting heads, matched in diameter to the head specification.
  • Blower nozzles, which are model-specific and easy to lose on site.
  • At least one spare battery per two tools, so a flat battery never stops a job.

Our Makita range covers tools, consumables, batteries and chargers, and the batteries and chargers range covers the platform components separately.

Frequently asked questions

Are Makita whipper snippers any good?
Yes. Makita’s 18 V and 18 V×2 trimmer range is widely used in commercial grounds work, and the split-shaft system means one power unit covers trimmer, edger, pole hedge trimmer and blower attachments. The limitation is duty cycle: battery trimmers suit regular commercial work but not continuous heavy clearing.
Which Makita whipper snipper is best?
It depends on the work. Light trimming and edging suits an 18 V unit; heavier brush and overgrowth needs 18 V×2 or 40 V. The split-shaft attachments are the more important decision, because they determine what jobs the tool can take on.
What are common Makita trimmer problems?
Line breakage from using the wrong diameter for the head, and premature line feed from an incorrectly loaded spool, account for most issues. Battery runtime shortfalls are usually a battery at end of life rather than a tool fault.
Do Makita batteries fit all Makita tools?
No. 18 V LXT, 18 V×2 and 40 V Max XGT are separate platforms, and a battery from one will not fit a tool from another. Within 18 V LXT, batteries are interchangeable across the entire range, which is the main argument for standardising on that platform.
What does the Z suffix mean on a Makita model number?
Body only — the tool is supplied without a battery or charger. A model with an F or W suffix in the kit code includes batteries and a charger. This is the most common ordering error we see on Makita products.

Kitting out a cleaning and grounds team?

Tell us what the crew does and how many people share the tools, and we will recommend a battery platform and a tool list that shares batteries rather than duplicating them. Browse the Makita range or ask us to spec a kit.
