Edco ABC Steel Wool Refill - Grade 2 (Medium Coarse)

The Edco ABC Steel Wool Grade 2 provides the perfect balance of aggressive cutting power and controlled abrasion. Classified as a medium-coarse grade, this highly versatile commercial steel wool is specifically engineered for intermediate surface preparation. It is the go-to abrasive for tradespeople who need to remove moderate defects, scuff surfaces prior to painting, or clean heavy dirt from industrial machinery without causing the deep gouges associated with the coarsest wire grades.

Forged from high-grade steel alloy, the Grade 2 pad easily conforms to complex profiles and curved architectural features. It is exceptionally effective at removing old floor wax, scuffing glossy surfaces to create a mechanical key for new primer, and polishing out moderate rust spotting on robust metal equipment. Essential for painters, carpenters, and facility maintenance crews, this refill pack ensures consistent, professional-grade surface preparation across a multitude of commercial worksites.

Ideal For:

  • Surface Preparation: Perfect for lightly scoring and 'keying' existing glossy paintwork or varnished timber to ensure maximum adhesion for new coats of primer and paint.
  • Industrial Cleaning: Effectively scrubs stubborn grease, dried grime, and moderate rust scale from cast iron, factory machinery, and heavy metal tools.
  • Floor Maintenance: Highly effective when used with stripping chemicals to manually remove stubborn, built-up wax from corners and skirting boards where large rotary machines cannot reach.

Key Features & Operational Benefits:

  • Medium-Coarse Grade 2: Delivers controlled abrasion, making it aggressive enough to remove defects but gentle enough to avoid deep structural scratches on hardwood.
  • Flexible Matrix Design: Effortlessly molds around ornate wood trims, stair spindles, and pipework, ensuring an even abrasive finish on difficult profiles.
  • High Tensile Strength: Resists premature shredding and disintegration, providing excellent operational longevity during extended scrubbing tasks.
  • Chemical Synergistic: Performs exceptionally well when saturated with mineral turpentine, floor strippers, or heavy-duty commercial degreasers.

What is Grade 2 steel wool best used for?

Grade 2 is a medium-coarse abrasive. It is primarily used for surface preparation, such as scuffing glossy paint to create a bonding key for new primer, removing moderate rust from tools, and stripping wax from corners.

How does it compare to Grade 3?

Grade 2 uses slightly finer wire than Grade 3. While Grade 3 is for aggressive stripping of thick paint, Grade 2 is better for intermediate sanding and smoothing rough wood without leaving deep gouges.

Can I use Grade 2 to polish chrome or brass?

No. Grade 2 is still too coarse and will leave visible scratch marks on delicate metals like chrome, brass, and copper. For polishing metals, use Grade 00 or 0000.

Is this suitable for removing old floor wax?

Yes. It is highly effective for manual edge-cleaning. You can saturate the Grade 2 steel wool with a commercial floor stripper to scrub built-up wax away from skirting boards where floor machines cannot reach.

Can I use it to clean glass?

Absolutely NOT. Grade 2 will instantly and permanently scratch glass and mirrors. Only ultra-fine Grade 0000 should be used on glass, and even then, with extreme caution.

Will this steel wool rust in storage?

It is made from carbon steel and will rust if exposed to moisture or high humidity. Store it in a sealed plastic bag or a dry environment to maintain its integrity.

Do I need to wear PPE when using this?

Yes. You should wear protective work gloves to prevent the steel splinters from embedding in your skin, and safety glasses to protect your eyes from flying rust or paint dust.

How do I cut the pad to the right size?

Always use a pair of heavy-duty scissors or tin snips to cut steel wool. Tearing it with your hands can cause severe cuts.

Can I use this on wet wood?

Using steel wool on wet bare wood (especially oak or cedar) is not recommended. The tiny iron particles left behind will react with the moisture and tannins in the wood, causing permanent black stains.

Is it safe to use with flammable solvents?

Yes, it is often used with mineral spirits or thinners. However, steel wool itself is highly flammable and can spark, so ensure you are working in a well-ventilated area strictly away from ignition sources.

Does it contain soap?

No. This is a purely abrasive steel wool pad. It does not contain any impregnated soaps or detergents like domestic kitchen scouring pads.

Do you offer trade pricing for commercial cleaning companies?

Yes, Freshway Supplies offers volume pricing and trade accounts for painters, builders, and commercial cleaners. Contact us to establish your account.
