Edco ABC Steel Wool Refill - Grade 1 (Medium)

The Edco ABC Steel Wool Grade 1 is the definitive medium-grade abrasive, offering exceptional versatility for professional surface finishing and delicate restoration work. Bridging the gap between heavy stripping and fine polishing, this commercial steel wool is specifically engineered to smooth raised wood grain, remove stubborn scuff marks from resilient floors, and clean sensitive architectural metals without inflicting deep structural scratches.

Manufactured from high-grade, resilient steel alloy, the Grade 1 pad easily conforms to intricate profiles, making it vastly superior to flat sandpaper for detailed architectural features. It is highly favored by carpenters for smoothing timber surfaces between coats of varnish or polyurethane, ensuring a flawless, professional finish. Furthermore, facility maintenance teams rely on this grade to gently remove heavy grime and light oxidation from brass fixtures, copper piping, and industrial aluminum, restoring the surface to its original aesthetic.

Ideal For:

  • Carpentry & Woodworking: The perfect abrasive for smoothing raised wood fibers after applying water-based stains, and for dulling glossy finishes between coats of clear varnish.
  • Hard Floor Maintenance: Gently but effectively buffs out stubborn black rubber scuff marks from commercial vinyl and linoleum floors without stripping the base sealer.
  • Architectural Metal Cleaning: Removes light rust, heavy grime, and oxidation from copper, brass, and industrial aluminum surfaces safely.

Key Features & Operational Benefits:

  • Grade 1 Medium Abrasion: Provides a gentle cutting action that smooths surfaces and removes light defects without aggressive gouging.
  • Conformable Fiber Matrix: Easily bends to wrap around curved banisters, molded skirting boards, and tubular piping, ensuring even pressure and a uniform finish.
  • High Tensile Durability: The high-quality steel wire resists premature crumbling, allowing operators to complete extensive finishing tasks with a single pad.
  • Versatile Application: Highly effective whether used completely dry for wood smoothing or saturated with metal polishing compounds.

What is Grade 1 steel wool used for?

Grade 1 is a 'Medium' abrasive. It is perfect for smoothing out wood grain between coats of varnish, removing black scuff marks from vinyl floors, and cleaning light oxidation off copper and brass pipes.

Can I use Grade 1 on polished chrome?

It is generally not recommended for mirror-finish chrome or highly polished stainless steel, as it may leave micro-scratches that dull the shine. For high-gloss chrome, use the ultra-fine Grade 0000.

Is this better than sandpaper for wood finishing?

Yes, especially for curved surfaces. Sandpaper is flat and rigid, which can flatten rounded wood details. Steel wool molds to the shape of the wood, providing a smooth finish on intricate moldings and chair legs.

How does it help between coats of varnish?

When you apply stain or varnish to timber, the moisture causes the wood fibers to raise and feel rough. Gently rubbing Grade 1 steel wool over the dried surface cuts these fibers down, creating a perfectly smooth base for the next coat.

Can I use it to clean my BBQ?

Grade 1 is effective for scrubbing grease off robust BBQ hotplates, but you must rinse the grill meticulously afterward to ensure no microscopic steel fibers remain, as they pose a hazard if ingested.

Will this remove rust?

It will successfully remove light surface rust and general oxidation. For severe, thick, flaky rust on structural steel, you should use the more aggressive Grade 3.

Can it be used on glass?

Absolutely NOT. Grade 1 is too coarse and will instantly leave permanent scratches on glass and mirrors.

How should I cut the steel wool?

Always use scissors or tin snips to cut steel wool. Tearing it by hand can cause the wire to cut or embed into your skin.

Is it safe to use with liquid polishes?

Yes, Grade 1 works exceptionally well when paired with liquid metal polishes or brass-cleaning compounds to restore heavily tarnished metals.

Will the steel wool catch fire?

Yes, steel wool is highly flammable. A simple spark from a battery or an open flame will cause it to ignite and burn rapidly. Store it safely away from ignition sources.

Does this product rust?

Because it is made from carbon steel, it will oxidize and rust if exposed to water. If you use it with a water-based liquid, you will need to discard it after use.

Do you offer trade accounts for carpenters?

Yes, Freshway Supplies offers volume discounts and trade pricing for professional carpenters, painters, and facility managers. Contact us to establish your account.
