Product Description

Edco ABC Steel Wool Refill - Grade 000 (Extra Fine)

The Edco ABC Steel Wool Grade 000 is an extra-fine commercial abrasive, precision-engineered for delicate surface preparation and high-end restorative polishing. Unlike traditional sandpaper, which can flatten and distort intricate architectural details, this commercial steel wool features a highly pliable, extra-fine wire matrix that conforms seamlessly to curved profiles. It provides an exceptionally smooth, uniform finish on fine timber, antique furniture, and sensitive metals without inflicting deep structural scratches.

Forged from premium-grade steel alloy, the Grade 000 pad is highly favored by professional carpenters and cabinet makers for cutting back and dulling polyurethane, lacquer, and shellac between coats. Furthermore, it is a highly effective polishing abrasive for automotive detailers and metalworkers, gently lifting light oxidation and water spots from copper, brass, and chrome. Providing exceptional tactile control, this refill pack is an essential consumable for professional restoration and high-end facility maintenance.

Ideal For:

Cabinetry & Woodworking: The optimal abrasive for gently rubbing out dust nibs between final coats of varnish or paint, ensuring a flawless, hand-rubbed finish.
Metal Restoration: Safely buffs away light tarnish and oxidation from delicate brass fixtures, copper piping, and decorative chrome without dulling the underlying shine.
Automotive Detailing: Effectively removes tough water spots and light exhaust soot from metal trim and alloy wheels when paired with a quality metal polish.

Key Features & Operational Benefits:

Extra-Fine Grade 000 Abrasion: Delivers a highly controlled, gentle polishing action that prepares surfaces and removes minor defects without aggressive gouging.
Superior Conformability: The flexible wire pad wraps easily around intricate wood carvings, spindles, and curved tapware for consistent, even finishing.
High-Quality Steel Alloy: Manufactured to resist premature crumbling, allowing operators to complete detailed buffing tasks with a single, durable pad.
Chemical Synergistic: Performs exceptionally well when saturated with liquid metal polishes, finishing oils, or wax compounds to enhance the restorative effect.

Technical Specifications:

Brand: Edco
Product Range: ABC Handyman Refill
Product Type: Steel Wool
Abrasive Grade: Grade 000 (Extra Fine)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Grade 000 steel wool used for?

Grade 000 is an 'Extra Fine' abrasive. It is used for delicate tasks such as smoothing out final coats of varnish on furniture, buffing light tarnish off brass and copper, and removing water spots from chrome.

Is this safer than sandpaper for wood finishing?

Yes. Sandpaper is rigid and can easily burn through the edges of a fresh coat of varnish. Grade 000 steel wool is highly flexible, providing a gentle, even cut that removes dust nibs without damaging the finish.

Can I use Grade 000 to clean my windshield or glass?

While it is extra fine, Grade 000 still carries a slight risk of micro-scratching modern glass. For safely cleaning auto glass or mirrors, you must use the absolute finest grade available: Grade 0000.

Will it scratch stainless steel appliances?

It is not recommended for brushed stainless steel. Carbon steel wool can leave microscopic iron particles in the grain of the stainless steel, which will oxidize and cause rust spots. Use a synthetic non-scratch pad instead.

How do I cut the steel wool pad?

Always use heavy-duty scissors or tin snips to cut off the required amount. Do not attempt to tear the steel wool with your hands, as the fine wire can easily slice your skin.

Is it safe to use with liquid polishes?

Yes, it is highly recommended. Pairing Grade 000 with a dedicated liquid metal polish or cutting oil significantly improves the polishing result and extends the life of the pad.

Will the steel wool rust in my toolbox?

Yes. Because it is manufactured from pure carbon steel, it will rust rapidly if exposed to high humidity or water. Store it in a sealed container or zip-lock bag.

Does it present a fire hazard?

Yes. Extra-fine steel wool (like Grade 000 and 0000) is highly flammable. It can ignite instantly if exposed to a direct flame or a spark from a battery. Keep it strictly away from ignition sources.

Does it contain any cleaning soap?

No. This is a dry, pure abrasive steel wire pad. It does not contain any impregnated detergents or soaps.

Can I use it to polish my car's exhaust tips?

Absolutely. Detailers frequently use Grade 000 steel wool to safely scrub baked-on carbon and soot from stainless steel or chrome exhaust tips.

Should I wear gloves when using this?

Yes. Even fine steel wool can shed microscopic metallic splinters during aggressive buffing. Wearing protective gloves will prevent skin irritation.

Do you offer trade pricing for carpenters?

Yes, Freshway Supplies provides volume pricing and trade accounts for professional carpenters, painters, and automotive detailers. Contact us to establish your account.

They earned it! I hardly ever leave reviews, but Abe absolutely deserves this one.

I rang ready to spend nearly $2,000. Unfortunately, the item wasn’t in stock for pickup and would take seven days to arrive. Abe said he’d call me back.

Five minutes later, he had found one in stock at another business in Parramatta — and negotiated the same discount for me there.
He had just lost the sale, yet he was genuinely happy he could help. That says everything.

This is how an excellent reputation is earned: day by day, customer by customer. Could not possibly ask for more.

Thank you, Abe — AWESOME service!
