Surface Cleaners vs Gun Nozzles: Parameter Matching

A surface cleaner only beats a gun nozzle when flow, pressure and nozzles match.

A bigger surface cleaner does not make a small pressure washer faster. Fit a wide rotary deck to a machine that cannot feed it and the jets spin slowly, the clean path narrows and the operator ends up going back over striped concrete with the gun anyway. Matching the deck to the pump is a buying decision, not an accessory afterthought.

Our earlier comparison, surface cleaner vs pressure washer nozzle, explains which jobs suit each tool. This one is a parameter checklist for buyers who already own the machine and need to choose the right attachment.

Surface cleaner vs pressure washer nozzle: the short answer

Use a surface cleaner on large flat areas when your machine has enough flow to spin the rotor at a useful speed and its pressure sits within the deck's rating. Use a gun nozzle for edges, steps, walls, small areas and spot soils. Match deck width, nozzle size and inlet fitting to the machine.

What a surface cleaner actually needs

A rotary surface cleaner is a spinning spray bar under a hood. Two or more small nozzles on the bar are pushed around by their own reaction force. Three inputs decide how well it works:

  1. Flow: more litres per minute gives more cleaning water and steadier rotation.
  2. Pressure: must sit within the deck's maximum rating.
  3. Nozzle size on the bar: must suit the machine's flow and pressure, or the pump will either unload or fail to reach working pressure.

Powerblast's nozzle size chart shows how nozzle size relates to flow and pressure; when a deck has two nozzles, the combined orifice area must match the machine, not each nozzle alone.

Flow hunger and deck width

Wider decks need more flow to clean evenly, because the same water is spread over a bigger circle. A small machine on a wide deck leaves an under-cleaned ring and stripes between passes.

Kerrick 460 mm stainless steel rotary surface cleaner with four castor wheels
Kerrick KSC18/W: Freshway lists a 460 mm stainless steel deck, two rotating jets and a rating up to 4000 PSI.

Freshway lists the Kerrick KSC18/W as a 460 mm (18-inch) stainless steel surface cleaner with two rotating jets and four castor wheels, rated up to 4000 PSI. The Kerrick KSC20/W is listed as a 530 mm (20-inch) ABS deck with a dual-rotor spray bar, rated for cold or hot water machines up to 4000 PSI and 82 Β°C. Moving from 460 mm to 530 mm increases the cleaned circle's area by about 33 per cent (530Β² Γ· 460Β² β‰ˆ 1.33), so the bigger deck needs more water to clean to the same standard.

Kerrick KSC20/W: Freshway lists a 530 mm ABS deck rated up to 4000 PSI and 82 Β°C.

A practical way to test the match is a timed square: mark out 10 mΒ² of typical concrete, clean it once with the deck and once with the gun on a fan nozzle, and record the minutes and the finish. If the deck is not clearly faster with an even finish, the machine is probably under-feeding it, and a narrower deck or a different nozzle set will do better.

Pressure limits and temperature

Check two ratings before connecting: maximum pressure and maximum water temperature. A hot-water machine running hotter than the deck's rating can damage seals and the swivel. The KSC20/W listing gives 82 Β°C; read each product page for its own limit.

High-pressure water also needs controls. WorkSafe Victoria's high pressure water jetting alert applies to rotary decks too: never lift a running deck off the ground or put a hand near the skirt.

Finish quality: where each tool wins

Surface cleaners give an even finish on open concrete and pavers because the jets stay at a fixed height. Gun nozzles are faster on edges, kerbs, steps and vertical faces, and are better for spot soils such as gum. Most jobs use both: deck first, gun for edges.

When the gun nozzle is the better choice

  • Areas smaller than a car space.
  • Stairs, ramps with lips and drainage grates.
  • Walls, bins and machinery.
  • Spot soils that need a narrow fan for a few seconds.
  • Sites where the machine's flow is too low for a deck.

Spec matching table

Check What to compare Why it matters
Deck width 460 mm vs 530 mm and up Wider decks need more flow for an even clean
Pressure rating Deck maximum vs machine maximum Exceeding it can damage the swivel and seals
Temperature rating Deck maximum vs hot-water output Seals and bearings have limits
Nozzle size on spray bar Combined orifice vs machine flow and pressure Wrong size causes low pressure or unloading
Inlet fitting Quick connect type or thread Must fit your lance or hose
Housing Stainless steel or ABS Durability versus weight

Water supply and runoff

A surface cleaner uses the full flow of the machine continuously, so the tap must keep up; Spitwater explains inlet flow set-up. Wash water from car parks and forecourts carries oil and grit, and the NSW EPA's stormwater guidance requires it to be kept out of drains. Some decks have recovery ports; check the listing if capture is a site requirement.

Mistakes that cause striping

  • Walking too fast for the deck's rotation speed.
  • Too little overlap between passes.
  • Fitting a deck nozzle set intended for a different flow.
  • Running a wide deck from a small machine.
  • Letting the skirt wear so the jets sit too high.

Pushing a deck all shift is also physical work. SafeWork NSW's hazardous manual tasks guidance is worth applying: rotate operators and use wheeled decks on rough ground.

Frequently asked questions

Will a surface cleaner work on a 10 A electric machine?

It can on small areas if the deck's nozzles suit the machine's flow and pressure. Wide decks generally need higher-flow machines to clean evenly.

Why does my surface cleaner leave rings?

Usually the flow is too low for the deck width, the nozzles are worn or wrongly sized, or passes are not overlapping.

Can I use a surface cleaner with hot water?

Only if the deck is rated for that temperature. Check the maximum temperature on the product page.

Do I still need a gun nozzle?

Yes. Edges, steps, walls and spot soils are faster and safer with the gun.
