High Window and Overhead Cleaning: Poles, Extensions and Safety

Above two storeys the window cleaning kit changes rather than scales up. Poles replace ladders for most work, and what goes on the end of the pole becomes the whole specification.

Reach from the ground wherever the geometry allows

Pole work from ground level removes most of the fall risk and is faster than moving ladders, so the first decision is how much reach a pole can achieve on the building. Only where poles cannot reach — deep reveals, obstructed facades, some internal atria — does access equipment become necessary.

That ordering matters because the safety obligation changes completely between the two. Pole work is cleaning with a long tool; ladder and platform work is work at height, with the duties that implies.

Prices are Freshway catalogue prices as at 16 September 2026 and are subject to change. Confirm the current price, and whether GST applies, before quoting.

Reach tools stocked by Freshway Supplies

Extension and high-reach tools
Product Use Price
Extension electrostatic duster SAB42022 High dusting on ledges and fittings A$12.50
Lambswool duster with extension handle High dusting without a ladder A$18.00
Edco cobweb soft ceiling brush with telescopic handle 10395 Ceilings, vents and high corners A$20.00
35 mm telescopic chrome vacuum rod 31300417 Extended vacuum reach A$26.00
32 mm vacuum cleaner telescopic chrome rod Extended vacuum reach, 32 mm fitment A$26.50
Edco deluxe fan brush with extension handle 41302 Cobweb and high dust removal A$28.00
Oates window cleaner with extension handle B-60109FP Window cleaning at moderate height A$33.46

Two of these items are worth noting for different reasons. The telescopic vacuum rods let a standard machine reach ceilings and high vents, which is often the cheapest way to extend the reach of equipment already owned. The extension-handle window cleaner is a mid-reach tool rather than a full pole system, and it suits ground-floor-plus work rather than multi-storey facades.

Pole systems and water-fed work

Full pole systems deliver purified water to a brush head, with the pole extending to several storeys. The method removes the squeegee stage entirely: purified water dries without spotting, so the brush cleans and the rinse is the finish. It suits large glazed facades and buildings where ladders or platforms would otherwise be required throughout.

The trade-offs are water handling — purified water has to be produced and carried — and the fact that the method is less effective on heavy soiling and on some types of framing.

Safety when poles are not enough

Where a building requires access equipment, the work changes category. Three practical points:

  • Treat it as work at height, with the planning and controls that requires, rather than as an extension of window cleaning.
  • Control the area below, including signage and barriers where equipment or water could fall.
  • Check licensing and competency for the equipment in question; some access equipment requires a licence to operate.

Our safety signs and grippers range covers the ground-level controls.

Water quality and spotting

Spotting on glass is a mineral problem, not a cleaning problem. Tap water leaves deposits as it dries, which is why water-fed pole work uses purified water and why hard water staining on glass needs a dedicated remover rather than more cleaning. Where a site has a history of spotting, the water is usually the cause.

Equipment that extends what you already own

A significant part of high cleaning is not buying new machines but extending existing ones. Telescopic rods turn a standard vacuum into a high-reach machine; extension leads extend the working radius of corded equipment; extension handles extend brushes. Checking what can be extended is usually cheaper than adding a machine.

Planning a high cleaning round

  1. Map the building by height and by what a pole can reach.
  2. Separate the rounds into ground-reach and access-equipment work, and price them separately.
  3. Identify the water source for pole work, and how purified water will be produced or transported.
  4. Agree the safety controls for the access equipment component before quoting.

Frequently asked questions

How high can I clean windows with a pole?
Water-fed pole systems reach several storeys and are the standard method for mid-rise glazed facades. The practical limit depends on pole length, water supply and whether the building geometry allows the brush to reach the glass from the ground.
Do water-fed poles leave spots?
Not if the water is purified. Spotting is caused by dissolved minerals in tap water, which is exactly why the method uses purified water. Spotting from a water-fed system usually means the purification has failed rather than the method.
What equipment do I need for cleaning high ceilings?
A telescopic handle with a suitable brush — a cobweb or fan brush for dust and cobwebs, or a telescopic vacuum rod where the site requires dust to be captured rather than moved.
When do I need access equipment instead of a pole?
Where the geometry defeats a pole: deep window reveals, obstructed facades, internal atria and surfaces that need physical contact. Those jobs become work at height and should be planned accordingly.
Can I extend the reach of my existing vacuum?
Often yes. Telescopic chrome rods are available in 32 mm and 35 mm fitments, which cover most commercial vacuums, and they are far cheaper than a purpose-built high-reach machine.
