Run scrub then burnish on night fill — shine without trapping residue or slip risk.

Friday night fill in a Melbourne supermarket left black heel marks down every freezer aisle after the scrubber-dryer finished on time. The crew had removed soil — they had not restored gloss. Night shine programs fail when teams treat burnishers and scrubber-dryers as interchangeable toys instead of sequenced machines with different pad and chemistry jobs.

Shine vs soil removal

Burnisher vs scrubber dryer supermarket programs split into two jobs: scrubber-dryers lift and extract soil with solution and vacuum; burnishers restore gloss on an already clean, dry finish. Spec both machine classes for Australian night fill, sequence scrub before burnish, and match pads plus maintainer chemistry so shine does not trap overnight residue.

Burnisher vs Scrubber-Dryer for Supermarket Night Shine Programs

If the floor is still sticky after a scrub pass, burnishing will smear soil into a cloudy film. If the floor is clean but dull, another scrub cycle wastes labour that a high-speed pad would fix in one aisle run.

Night sequencing

Australian supermarket night fill packs aisles with cages, bakers and ambient restockers. Build the sequence around traffic windows, not around which machine happens to be charged:

  1. Sweep or dust-mop loose crumbs so pads do not grind grit into vinyl.
  2. Auto-scrub with measured detergent and a working squeegee — leave the floor dry enough to walk.
  3. Spot-treat protein or oil spills that survived the scrub path.
  4. Burnish or spray-buff only when the surface is dry and free of standing solution.
  5. Reopen aisles with wet-floor controls cleared so night fill can move cages safely.

SafeWork NSW lists water and other contaminants among causes of slips, trips and falls on the same level. WorkSafe Victoria's slips guidance and WA's WorkSafe slips pages push the same point: a shiny wet aisle is still a slip risk until it is dry.

Pad and finish systems

Pad colour and chemistry have to match the machine speed. The Polivac A23HS lists a 30 cm pad path, 375 RPM operating speed, 1.3 kW motor and 32 kg weight with a 15-metre lead — compact enough for tight end-caps and staff amenities after the main aisles are done. The Polivac PV25TS lists dual speeds at 188 RPM for scrubbing and 375 RPM for polishing, with a 40 cm pad holder and a small onboard suction motor — useful when one trolley must cover both deep-clean nights and gloss nights.

For spray-buff chemistry, Agar Spraybuff C is listed as a 5 L spray cleaning liquid with pH 6–8, applied lightly then buffed with a white or pink pad on a rotary machine. For combined wash-and-polish on sealed floors, Agar Scrub 'N' Shine lists a low-to-moderate foam profile and auto-scrub dilution around 1:80 to 1:100 — check the label and SDS on every batch. Australian manufacturer pages such as Polivac and Agar are useful for confirming system intent alongside the Freshway listings.

Slip after burnish

High gloss is not the same as high traction. Overdosed maintainer, oily spray-buff residue or burnishing a still-damp scrub path can leave a slippery film under fluorescent lights that looks "wet look" from the end of the aisle. Keep a dry microfibre check cloth in the kit: if the cloth greases up after a wipe, do not reopen the aisle — neutralise and re-scrub.

Supermarket night programs should treat slip checks as a close-out step, not an optional polish vanity pass.

Spec both machines

Aisle productivity belongs to the scrubber-dryer. The Nilfisk SC550 lists 50 L solution and 50 L recovery tanks, cylindrical 508 mm or disc 610 mm decks, lithium-ion packages, and theoretical productivity up to 2,550 m²/h (CYL 51) or 3,050 m²/h (D 61), with noise around 65 dB(A) normal or 59–61 dB(A) in silent mode. That class of machine removes soil; it does not replace a 375 RPM burnisher when the finish needs optical recovery after a heavy week.

Labour skills

Burnisher control is a learnt skill — torque, pad pressure and edge work around gondola feet. Scrubber-dryer skills centre on squeegee seal, solution flow and dump cycles. Cross-train both, but do not assume a new starter who can drive an SC550 can safely run a high-speed rotary on day one. SafeWork NSW manual task guidance and WA WorkSafe's hazardous manual tasks advice still apply to machine handling, cable management and dump-tank lifting.

Common program mistakes

  • Burnishing before the scrubber path is dry.
  • Using aggressive scrub pads every night until the finish is cut through.
  • Spray-buffing with neat chemical instead of the listed light spray method.
  • Skipping dust removal so grit dulls the fresh gloss in one trading day.
  • Running one undersized compact polisher for the whole supermarket footprint.

Frequently asked questions

Can a scrubber-dryer replace a burnisher for supermarket shine?

No. Scrubber-dryers remove and extract soil; burnishers restore gloss on a clean, dry finish — most night shine programs need both in sequence.

What speeds does the Polivac PV25TS list?

The Freshway listing states 188 RPM for scrubbing and 375 RPM for polishing, with a 40 cm pad holder.

Is high gloss always safer for shoppers?

No. Residue or damp film under a glossy look can reduce traction — verify the aisle is dry and residue-free before reopening.

Where do compact burnishers fit in a large store?

Use them for amenities, end-caps and tight back-of-house after the main aisle scrubber-dryer has finished the open floor.
